* Would you pay $60 or more per night for a luxury vacation for your dog while you go away? What if it included cage free accommodations, plenty of play time and trips outdoors? Fox News reports on k9 Resorts.  

* Four pit bulls were found sick and shivering in the back of a UHaul truck near Albany NY. The man charged is the same man who was charged earlier this month with torturing pitbull puppies in September. The dogs are being cared for by the Mowhawk Hudson Humane Society. Two of the puppies from the earlier case have been adopted, and one passed away.

* We sometimes encounter loose and/or aggressive dogs on our walks and while I feel anxious for my safety, I also feel worried for the dogs and wonder about their home situation. In the news recently,  allegedly aggressive dogs trapped a woman in her car and in another report, two dogs attacked hikers on a trail. What do you do when you encounter a loose dog?

* And now, because we really need a smile after all that... Mashable brings us10 dogs who love winter! Enjoy them sledding, slipping, sliding and springing through the snow!

Wednesday Pet Roundup- After Holidays Edition

Hi and welcome to Wednesday Pet Roundup! Here's Kelly, reminding me to renew my commitment to fitness this new year. And here are your links for this week.

















  * From Mercury news, Tillman the bulldog rode the waves on an impressive nearly-120-foot long float with real surf in the Tournament of Roses Parade.

 * The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports that pets given as holiday gifts too often end up being returned to the shelter. Surrendered pets suffer emotionally when they are returned to a shelter cage.

* Amber the pitbull will soon be placed in a new home. nj.com tells us that she was abandoned with a note on her collar: "Amber: I need a family."









*Reuters reports that having a cat as a kid can help reduce chances of developing allergies. However, the same is not true for adults. Getting a cat when you are an adult nearly doubles your allergy risks.

Pit Bull Healed with Love

Recently I read about something that really touched my heart, Harper the pit bull puppy who was deformed, discarded in a trash bag, and literally LOVED back to health.

His rescuer is Erica Daniel of  Dolly's Foundation.
 
Mission: The purpose of Dolly’s Foundation is to rescue, rehabilitate and rehome homeless, neglected, and abused American Pit Bull Terriers and other bully breed dogs. As well as preserve, promote, and bring positive awareness to the breed and the negative stereotype bestowed upon them.

The organization is named after a very special dog. Dolly's story will break your heart...and make you cheer. She came to a Florida shelter as a stray and eventually was adopted into her forever home. Months later, however, Dolly was returned to the shelter, dirty, frightened and bloody. She had been used as a bait dog in a fighting ring.

The poor sweet girl was so hurt.

Erica Daniel helped heal her wounds and her heart, gave her love and made her a part of her own family. Now Dolly has her Canine Good Citizen award, has her own facebook page, and is an ambassador to her breed. 

Dolly's Foundation is helping dogs everywhere, changing laws, and making a difference. Check out their dogs for adoption, and spread the word. You can also look for events in your area or find out more about education programs.
