Okay, so you have decided to buy a new puppy but you don?t know how to proceed in this regard? If this is your situation, there are certain things you need to know, especially if you are buying a puppy for sale for the very first time. Having pets, especially dogs is the most common activity today not just because dogs are the most loyal forms of pets, but also because owning a dog is associated with a status symbol now. Many people just love to have dogs and it is better if you have a pet dog in the form of a puppy. A puppy that grows with you will know you well and will be more loyal towards you. So let us have a look at the things you should consider while having a puppy for sale and where you can begin your search for such a puppy.

Decide the dog breed

The first step in having a puppy for sale is to decide its breed. You need to find out the breed that you want to most. Different people have different needs and demands. While some of you might be looking for a dog just to represent your social status, others of you might be looking for a puppy that grows up to provide protection for your home. However, in order to save time, it is preferable if you begin your search from the home on the Internet. To make your search extremely simple, you can select a breed and your state and click search. A minute later, you will find several puppies and you can choose from the one you desire.

Never rely on pet shops that obtain animals from "puppy millers"

Now you need to be aware that there is a term called "puppy millers." As a matter of fact, "puppy millers" are someone who are interested in just one thing and that is making money. It is for this reason that pet stores that get puppy for sale from the pet millers will never have healthy puppies. Puppy millers will most often never check the good health of the animals and they will rely more on quantity than the quality. This can be a loss for you and you should therefore take ample care regarding this issue. Check the pet store from which you want to obtain puppy for sale.

National Dog Bite Prevention Week: Understanding Your Dog's Signals

It’s National Dog Bite Prevention Week, and you can help the cause by learning to understand your dog’s warning signs. This week was established by Doggone Safe, an organization devoted to promoting education that can help prevent dog bites and providing support for dog bite victims. The ultimate goal of this week is to help us, the humans, properly understand and communicate with our dogs in ways that can help prevent biting. 

As Doggone Safe acknowledges, we often misunderstand our pups. When a dog bites, we interpret this behavior in negative human terms, when to a dog, biting is a relatively normal and primal behavior. By learning to understand why dogs are motivated to bite in the first place, we can help reduce the risk that our pet will respond to situations with a bite or other threatening behavior.

Basic knowledge of your dog’s physical behavior can take you a long way towards preventing biting. Our sister organization, Morris K9 Campus, published a blog post in honor of Dog Bite Prevention Week about canine body language and how to read the signs that may lead to aggression.

Watch out for:

• Tail between the legs
• Whites of eyes showing
• Ears back, head down, or teeth bared
• Excessive yawning or licking
• Furrowed or tense brow

You can also help prevent biting or lashing out by avoiding situations that often make dogs uncomfortable. Avoid surprising your dog, especially while they are asleep, as they may react instinctively and bite. Do not approach a tethered dog or a dog that is chewing on a bone; even if you know the dog well, they may become defensive. Also avoid forcing your dog into a submissive position.

By keeping your dog comfortable and watching for these warning signs, you can help prevent your dog and others' pets from biting. Though they may be subtle, these signs are a dog’s way of telling us how they are feeling. If you watch for them, you can become more in tune with your dog’s likes, dislikes and overall well-being.

Why Do Dogs Beg? How to Train Your Mooching Pooch

As the saying goes: you want what you can’t have. Ever wonder if your dog feels that way about what’s on your dinner plate? Dogs are notorious for begging for human food, even dogs who have never tasted anything but kibble. Why?

According to a recent “Ask a Vet” post on 7x7SF, the answer can be summed up in a single word: optimism. Your furry friend is tempted by the delicious smells coming from your dining room table, whether they have tasted table scraps before or not. Think about it: if you had only eaten bran cereal all your life, and were suddenly shown a chicken sandwich, wouldn't you be intrigued? As innate scavengers, dogs can’t help tracking down human food and pleading for a taste.

Despite dog’s inbred need to mooch, begging is a fairly simple problem to correct. Veterinarian Dr. Jeannine Berger, who is quoted in the “Ask a Vet” post on 7x7.com, recommends using management techniques and training solutions to teach your dog not to beg.

For starters, never feed your dog scraps from the table. This will only reinforce the behavior that you are trying to stop. If you do feed your dog human food, be sure to only reward them with it when they are behaving properly. Presenting the food to them in their regular dog food dish can further distance the human food from your dinner table.

Restricting your dog’s access to the dining room while you eat is one way to stop begging for good. This prevention tactic can be applied by putting up a baby gate, tethering your dog to a nearby piece of furniture or putting them in a crate with a food stuffed toy to keep them occupied.

If you prefer to keep your dog close, remove some of the temptation by making sure they are not hungry during your dinner time. Make a habit out of feeding your pet before you eat dinner, or present them with a food puzzle toy during your meal. A full and otherwise occupied dog will be less inclined to beg for your food.

You can also teach your dog to go to a certain spot during dinner, and reward them with a treat for staying there. Whether it’s a mat, bed, or corner of the room, your dog will begin to associate the spot with a reward, and become motivated to stay.

Every dog owner will find different methods that work best for their pup. The key is to be persistent. Try one training method steadily for a few weeks. If you find it ineffective, try another, and stick to it. As another saying goes: practice makes perfect!

REASONS WHY YOUR DOG IS PANTING

Is he too hot, ill, excited, fearful, in pain? Yes. It can be any of these reasons.   

Many doggie actions are just accepted by owners. These include big wet kisses, an excited bark (whenever the word “walk” is mentioned) and their pup’s mouth open with tongue hanging out, panting after playtime. Let’s focus on the panting…

According to PetMD.com, after Fido plays catch for a half hour, he’s both energized from playing and hot, especially during this humid summer season. Dogs pant for reasons spanning from excitement and exercise to stress and even illness.

Panting is a dog’s way of circulating air throughout their bodies in an effort to cool down. This process is similar to a human beginning to sweat; however due to most dogs fur/coat, they do not sweat through their skin, but through their tongue, ears and even their paw pads!

After intense play, it is perfectly normal for your pup to pant but if after a significant break from activity, they continue to pant heavily then this might be a sign of heatstroke. Moving to a cooler area or even indoors can remedy this! Also, don’t forget water for your dog as well as yourself when playing outdoors during hotter weather.

While panting for the most part is quite common with dogs of all ages, there are times when panting must be monitored in order to prevent dangerous complications. These complications include heatstroke, allergic reaction or illness.

Panting without any physical exercise can be a symptom of a more serious problem as well. Accompanied by vomiting, difficulty breathing and/or lethargy, a dog’s panting could indicate an ingestion of poison or an allergic reaction. It is important to monitor any changes in activity and to contact your local veterinarian if you believe your dog is exhibiting any of these symptoms.

Does Your Dog Like to Swim?

Did you introduce your dog to water and he or she absolutely loves the water? Or maybe the opposite...you introduced them to water and your dog just does not want anything to do with it.

Animal Planet writes that when it comes to swimming, canines generally fall into one of three categories. There are those that can swim, those that can be taught to swim and those that should steer clear of all aqueous environments.

Animal Planet explains that the low and lovable sturdy breeds like bulldogs, dachshunds and boxers do not have enough thrust from their short legs to keep them afloat in aquatic environments. Breeds that have short faces, such as the pug, also have a very hard time swimming since they fatigue easily. Small dogs such as the Maltese and Chihuahua are sometimes good swimmers, but may become easily chilled or frightened in the water, which can increase the risk of drowning.

Dogs and Cats Eat Grass.... Why?

Why dogs and cats eat grass is a common question. Do they just like the way it tastes? In researching why they eat grass, we found that this can be normal for both dogs and cats. There are some theories as to why this is the case.

For cats, one theory according to petmd.com, is the juice in the grass contains folic acid, which is an essential vitamin that they received from their mother's milk. Sometimes cats throw up after eating grass because they lack the necessary enzymes to break it down in their system.

For dogs, grass can actually aid them in digestion according to pets.webmd.com. The issue is if their is an accidental ingestion of  grass that has been treated with chemicals. If you notice your dog is eating grass frequently, a trip to the vet might be necessary because it could be more serious. This is important to do for both dogs and cats.

In the end, there seems to be several different reasons why dogs and cats like to eat grass... What do you think?

Giant Puppies - Caring for Your Large Breed Dog in Their Formative Years

Giant breed dogs are unique in size and as a result require special care in their early years to foster their growth and tame the gentle lion within.

Health and Nutrition
Puppies are in their growing stage. Large breed puppies in particular experience the greatest amount of growth in a short period of time. Their joints, muscles, and bones are all forming and expanding at the same time. As a result, giant breed puppies have voracious appetites and require three meals a day of special food specifically designed for their growing needs. Check with your veterinarian about the proper diet and amount of food to feed your big fuzzball.

Activity
Large breed puppies have lots of energy! Support your puppy’s need for exercise by engaging in various activities. Throw a ball around on a non-slip surface like a carpet or a grassy backyard. Teach your dog to play with chew toys. Because your puppy’s teeth are coming in, he or she will be likely to start teething on anything that will relieve the discomfort of new teeth growth, including your hands and ankles. Discourage this behavior of turning your forearm into a chew bone by putting a toy in his or her mouth every time your pup attempts to gnaw on you. Take your dog on a walk around town which is a wonderful bonding experience for you and your puppy. However, do not allow your baby pooch to come in contact with any people or other dogs if your puppy has not yet completed their vaccination series. It is also important to make sure you don't over-exercise your puppy. Try to avoid letting your puppy jump on and off beds, or into and out of cars. Since their bones and joints are still forming, too much exercise or exertion can cause long term damage.

Handle With Care
It is very important to adjust your large breed puppy to the human touch. This should not be difficult since it’s probably impossible for you to keep your hands off your adorable pup anyway! Make sure to touch your dog’s paws, their face, and open your puppy's mouth to check out their teeth. Though this might seem strange, it is an important step that will make grooming experiences and vet visits much easier.

Familiarize

Not only should you make your dog comfortable with the human touch but you should make sure your young puppy has lots of new experiences within the first couple of months in their lives. Familiarizing your dog with situations that seem strange and unfamiliar will help alleviate fears that could develop later in life over things as simple as skateboards and the sound of thunder. Bring your dog on trips in the car so he or she is accustomed to the sights and sounds. When your pup has completed their vaccination series, allow them to socialize and interact with other people and non-aggressive dogs. The more people, dogs, and situations your furbaby experiences as a puppy, the less mysterious and frightening life will be for your sizeable canine. Even dogs the size of Clifford can have fears!

Basic Training
Teach your pooch basic obedience commands like sit, stay, and come. It is very important to teach large breed dogs these simple commands when they are young. Therefore, when they grow larger and stronger you have already established control and your giant breed dog won’t overpower you. Don't allow your puppy to engage in behavior that you will later regret when he/she more than doubles in size. Jumping on people or pulling on the leash will not seem nearly as cute when your giant breed puppy reaches the size of a small horse and is capable of dragging you and an entire sleigh down the sidewalk. Everyday of the Puppy Steps Program, your puppy will experience a daily grooming session to familiarize her with the sights, sounds, and smells of the grooming salon. Pups are handled delicately by the grooming staff to help them adjust to the experience.
