The Possibility Dogs: What a Handful of "Unadoptables" Taught Me About Service, Hope and Healing
by Susannah Charleson
Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, June 4, 2013
ISBN: 978-0-547-73493-4
pages: 288
Price $27.00

I started reading The Possibility Dogs by Susannah Charleson late one night last week. A blurb on the cover mentioned something about "unadoptables." The white dog with the lopsided ears next to the blurb looked at me, as if to say "You know you want to find out why I was unadoptable, and if I had a happy ending." Past midnight, I was exhausted, but thought I'd take a peek just to get an idea what the book was like before bed. I vowed I'd stop at the end of the second page, but kept turning and turning, riveted by the honesty of the story. (You will be too. I have 3 to giveaway, at the end of this post.)

The author, who works in search-and-rescue, witnessed a horrible, ghastly situation (reading about it had me choking back tears), which resulted in her suffering from PTSD. Soon, her canine search partner, a sweet golden retriever named Puzzle, made the difference in her own healing.  Inspired by that experience, Charleson learns to identify abandoned dogs with service potential, often plucking them from shelters at the last minute, and to train them for work beside hurting partners, to whom these second-chance dogs bring intelligence, comfort and hope.

Charleson writes, "As a search K9 handler, I've seen how much good trained therapy dogs can do in a crisis. The affected public turns to them. Emergency responders need them too....There is something special that a gifted dogs can give to humans in distress."

Despite the possibility of rescue dogs with issues--timid, reactive, unpredictable, aggressive, sick--and the emotional toll of evaluating dogs tagged for euthanasia and not being able to save them all, Charleson knows that saving these dogs and matching them with human partners for emotional support work is the route she's destined to take. And one special dog becomes extra-special to Charleson herself.

The Possibility Dogs is a beautiful, thoughtful, heart-tugging book. Every action, every thought, follows a clear progression that took me deeper into the author's emotions while at the same time illuminated a finer understanding of the capabilities and potential of these very special dogs. I was drawn into the stories of each dog and each human partner and rooting for their lives together to work out. I fell in love with Charleson's golden retriever, Puzzle. I think I fell in love with every dog she wrote about: the old ones, the sick ones, the clever ones, the abandoned ones, the devoted ones.

The author's dogs, Puzzle and Jake Piper
I've always admired people who work in dog rescue, in any form. I've written about a man who rescues and trains shelter dogs for work in television and on Broadway. And several women who rescue dogs from shelters to work in their assistance dog programs. Each time I talk to people about this, I'm moved by their desire to help the dogs, as well as the dogs' capacities for helping humans.

I also know a little firsthand about this mutual relationship. My own Kelly is from a rescue group, as was sweet Brooks who, as a senior dog, had been abandoned and left on the streets. (And we are now searching for our next best friend through Petfinder and several great rescue groups.) We all have our issues, and I admit I sometimes struggle with stress and worries. My dogs are often a comfort to me when I'm anxious, and I've frequently thought about a dog trained for such situations. It's something I hope to look into more seriously. Reading this book, about people who are helped by amazing dogs, gives me strong encouragement.

I'm excited about this book for another reason--although the circumstances are different, its theme is a true-life version of a fiction series I'm writing (and can't wait to tell you about soon!)  I'm drawn to the subject, and write about it frequently- the mutual healing relationship between people and pets. Just as Kelly and I helped each other lose weight in Dieting with my Dog, and Topper, Chief, and other animals helped Luanne heal in Heart to Heart, Hand in Paw, The Possibility Dogs shares multiple ways dogs minister to the mind and heart.

There's no other way to put this. The Possibility Dogs by Susannah Charelson a must-read for everyone who loves dogs and understands their healing powers. I assume that is pretty much everyone who reads this blog. Now that I'm done reading the book, I want to pick it up and read it all over again.  Enter here for your chance to win.

Brooks Books- The Secret of Happy Ever After

Brooks here: I guess I fall for most books with the picture of a dog on the cover. I often rest my head on the arm of the couch the way the dalmatian in this picture does. And look into those eyes. This is a dog with a story of his own to tell. Maybe next time. Here's mom with the review. (And enter to win a copy for yourself at the end!)

The Secret of Happy Ever After
by Lucy Dillon
Penguin (2013)

Me: What more could I ask for-- a book combining dogs and a bookshop--two of my favorite things--and promising a happy ending? Well, this book didn't disappoint. It's absolutely captivating, and I think you're going to love it too. Keep reading for a chance to win a copy of your own!

The Secret of Happy Ever After is a heartwarming tale of love and friendship, set in England. Michelle is the business woman, with a devastating past. Anna is the ex-librarian with three stepchildren and an adorable but hyperactive Dalmatian. The two friends work and learn and grow together.
While Michelle isn't thrilled about owning a bookshop, Anna’s love of childhood favorites soon revitalizes the shop, and everyone around her. Even Michelle softs up, aided by her new friend Tavish, a Scottish terrier. But everything isn't always rosie. These friends need all the wisdom and courage the stories in the bookshop can give them in order to find their own happy ever afters.

First- the bookshop. If you enjoy the lessons and inspiration you can gain from reading a book, how about an inspiring book which incorporates characters learning lessons from other inspiring books? Brilliant! Especially because many of these books in this story were my childhood favorites as well-- Charlotte's Web, Anne of Green Gables, Winnie the Pooh, The Secret Garden, Madeline.

Second-- the dogs. There's Flash, the Springer Spaniel left behind. Then Pongo, the boisterous Dalmatian. And Tavish, the Scottish terrier who helps heal. The dogs are full of energy, personality and even quirks--from Pongo's enthusiastic shop visit to poor Tavish recovering after having some teeth pulled.

And then--the characters. Some of the past Michelle deals with is quite gritty and difficult, and makes her character a bit more aloof. As her past is revealed, we're able to understand her better and the author handles it well. Anna's family isn't always kind to her. Husbands aren't always nice. Children aren't always well-behaved. Michelle and Anna have problems and dreams. I cared about every character in this book, and rooted for them all throughout.

I highly recommend The Secret of Happy Ever After.

You can win a copy for yourself (sorry, U.S. only).

Brooks' Books- Once Upon a Flock

Brooks here: I've never met a chicken before, but this book makes me want to! The author takes such care to understand the needs and personalities of chickens as curious, interesting individuals. If only everyone would try as hard to understand all the creatures of the earth.

Of course the book is mainly about chickens, but I know the real star is the little white terrier, Marky. Here's Mom with the review. (And don't forget to check that Rafflecopter at the end for your chance to win one of two copies!)

Once Upon a Flock, Life with my Soulful Chickens
by Lauren Scheuer
Available: March 19 (Atria Books)

Once Upon a Flock is a charming, sweet book about a woman who finds amusement, companionship and self-discovery by nurturing a small flock of chickens in her back yard.  Scheuer is a longtime illustrator, and creates absolutely adorable images for the book by combining photographs and her own artwork. You can see an example on the cover. (See Marky peeking over the grass there?)

I thought it was interesting that one of the reasons Scheuer decided to raise chickens was the same as one of the reasons we adopted a dog--to fill a vacancy when our children grow up and leave the nest, or prepare to leave the nest. But Scheuer also loved to spend time outside, and the chickens provided her with just such an excuse. From building the hen house, to selecting her colorful assortment of baby chicks, to looking out for the well-being of the flock, Scheuer takes us along on her journey.

Her terrier Marky also figures prominently in the story. One of my favorite parts is when she describes how she trains Marky to accept and protect the chickens, and how they learn to be one big flock together.

Once Upon A Flock shares the joys, tears and rewards of loving any animal.

Scheuer writes the popular blog Scratch and Peck.

Brooks' Books- Here's a Dog Who Loves a Healthy Life

Brooks here: A while back Mom reviewed the beautiful book, Pukka, the Pup After Merle. Many of you may be familiar with Merle's Door, the inspiring bestselling book by Ted Kerasote. At the time, Pukka had a lot to teach us about being a puppy.

Now, he's all grown up (and a very handsome yellow lab, at that.) Pukka's Promise contains important information for keeping us--your best friends--as healthy and happy as possible. This book is the perfect for both our Valentine's week posts about love, and Responsible Pet Owner's Month. Here's Mom with the rest of the review:

Peggy: When Ted Kerasote's beloved dog Merle died too soon, he knew he'd want to give his new puppy the longest life possible. What followed was questioning, researching, interviewing, observing, and gathering the must accurate, respected and responsible data to define real-life tactics we can all take to help give our dogs what they need. Using the latest research, he helps us rethink the everyday choices we make for our dogs:
* How many vaccines are too many?
*Can a purebred be as healthy as a mixed breed?
*Is raw food healthier than kibble?
*Should we feed our dogs bones?
*Should we rethink spaying and neutering?

I especially enjoyed the sections on vaccinations, because I've heard of several dogs suffering negative reactions. And what to feed your dog is always an important, and difficult, topic.

Because Kerastoe masterfully weaves in stories of himself and Pukka, and presents the information in a friendly manner, it is never dry or difficult to grasp. I came away from the book feeling like I'd just had a conversation with someone who loves animals and wants all animals to be healthy and happy. Pukka's Promise gives me cause to rethink some of my previous opinions, and feel supported in other decisions. An intelligent and heartwarming read.

Amazon: Pukka's Promise

Watch this video A Day in the Life of Pukka. I love how he runs through the snow! Now that's a fit and healthy dog. Do you think he can resist chasing the moose?

Brooks' Books- A Cat Who's Almost as Smart As Me

Brooks here. I'm a lucky dog to have read two great books this month, both about LOVE. Today I'm reviewing Love Saves the Day. Gwen Cooper is an awesome author whose previous book is one of mom's favorites. You may have read Homer's Odyssey, a memoir about Gwen and her blind cat.

After so many people told Gwen that their favorite part of Homer's Odyssey was the way she "talked for" Homer, Gwen felt inspired to write a new book, a novel, Love Saves the Day. Whew! We've been reading stories by a lot of very smart animals lately! Well, I have never met a real cat (can you believe it?) so I especially enjoyed this opportunity to glimpse the way they think. Sure are curious critters. I absolutely recommend this book. Okay, here's Mom with the rest of the review.

Peggy: If you're suffering from a lack of inspiring reading material starring felines, then Love Saves the Day to the rescue! Author Gwen Cooper has a profound understanding of cats and a delightful ability to paint a scene.

The story revolves around Prudence, a thoughtful brown tabby with white socks. She lives with Sarah in New York City until one day, Sarah doesn't come home. The author lovingly shares Prudence's world as the cat faithfully waits for her beloved person to return, grieves, and deals with the transition of living with Sarah's daughter and her new husband. The characters are deep and believable. I felt drawn into Prudence's worries, fears and triumphs.

Love Saves the Day is about a daughter healing after the loss of her mother, a new husband and wife learning to adapt to marriage, and how the love of an animal can make us all better humans.

Ultimately, this is a book about LOVE.

Cat parents will relate to Prudence's musings (mewsings?) on The Bad Place (the vet's office) and The Monster (the vacuum). Heartbreaking, heartwarming and heartfelt, Love Saves the Day is a beautiful story that stays with me....maybe even as I contemplate adopting a cat!
I highly recommend Love Saves the Day.

 *New York Times Bestselling Author
* The First Novel Narrated by a Cat
* Inspired by a Real Cat, Gwen's cat Scarlett who will be familiar to readers of Homer's Odyssey.

Brooks Books- Dogs on Wheels

Hi Brooks here! The book I found for you today is called Dogs on Wheels, Traveling with your canine companion. I can tell you already that I highly approve of this book, since I like traveling with Mom and Dad. Here's Mom to tell you more!

Me: Dogs on wheels by Norm Mort, published by Hubble and Hattie (c) 2012
This book starts with an interesting introduction to the evolution of dogs, and the way people tend to humanize their dogs. This all leads up to the point that we like taking our dogs places with us, and in most cases dogs enjoy it too.

Because Hubble and Hattie is an imprint of an automobile publishing house (Veloce Inc.) you will find plenty of authoritative information  here on which types of vehicles are best suited for dogs, with lots of pertinent details-- effect of heating and cooling for the rear compartments, safety of the passenger area in case of emergencies, and considering the height of the windows for seeing out. Various makes and model cars are discussed in detail. If you're in the market for a new car, this chapter would be of great benefit to you.

Other chapters include traveling safety, airbags, travel accessories, and handling dog fears and phobias such as car sickness, claustrophobia and anxiety. There's even a chapter on traveling with your dog on a motorcycle or in a motorcycle sidecar!

The books ends with a chapter on dogs in art and advertising, including numerous car ads that include dogs, and mentions of books and films that include dogs who like to travel in cars.

While the actual "how to travel with your dog" information in this book isn't particularly new or revealing, Dogs on Wheels is a unique book combining two interests. This book would be the perfect gift for the car enthusiast who also loves dogs.

Brooks Books

Welcome to our new feature, Brooks Books--with comments from editor, Kelly. Brooks will be here regularly to tell you about dog and pet books, offer reviews and giveaways, and more.

Hi, Brooks here. Today I'm bringing you two great books, both by friends of my mom!

Charlie Bear, What a Headstrong Rescue Dog Taught me About Life and Second Chances by B.J. Taylor. Mom and B.J. have written for Guideposts magazine together, isn't that cool? I haven't read this book yet, but Charlie Bear is a rescue dog just like me, so it has to be good! In this book you will learn lessons about life, loss, love and of course, how special dogs are to their people. Adopting a new dog is not always easy, but BJ says that Charlie Bear eventually "sheds his headstrong ways, becomes a loving member of a family."What a happy ending! Way to go BJ!

Here's a book that's not about dogs. It's about horses! The author is also a friend of mom's who has carved out quite a niche in the horse world. She's not only an avid horsewoman, but editor for a horse magazine too! If you love horses, check out Rain Shadow by Catherine Madera. Catherine says this is inspired, in part, by a true story, and is about the healing bond between humans and horses. Hey, I know all about that! We agree!  This is Catherine's second book. Her first is a YA novel, Rodeo Dreams.
