Gizmo does Great Kamping!

We couldn't do K9Kamp without the support of our awesome featured bloggers.
Today please meet Gizmo from Terrier Torrent. Gizmo is a faithful Kamper...can't you tell?!

Gizmo is already an active pooch--he participates in many great activities and has a mom who keeps him fit and healthy. He even got the canine athlete seal of approval from Slimdoggy during a recent visit to BarkWorld!  So adding more activities onto his day was a challenge...but he did great! One of the specialties over at Terrier Torrent is geocaching.  What is Geocaching? I admit, I had to look it up to get a better understanding, but I discovered:
*It's like a treasure hunt using GPS
*A chache is a small, hidden containter
*It's a great activity to do with your dog!

Gizmo gets to run through trails, and sometimes without trails, helping his mom search for the hidden cache. What could be more fun?

Gizmo even went kayaking as a K9Kamp activity. Balancing on the kayak as it glides and rocks through the water is wonderful for your dog's core.  If you want to see what it might be like for you and your dog, don't miss the great video of Gizmo kayaking! I only wonder, there in Florida, did you see any alligators, Gizmo?

Thank you to Beth and Gizmo for participating in K9Kamp and being such great Kampers. I'll continue to feature more K9Kampers in future posts here, and also on Kol's Notes.
Keep fit with your pup--it's good for both of you!  See ya next K9Kamp!

Keeping Up with K9 Kamp- Walk this Way

This month's Keeping up with K9 Kamp activity was to do something new with your dog. This could be as elaborate as geocaching like Gizmo and kayaking like Honey or something as simple as trying a new route when you walk.

For us, it involved walking...but with a twist.

Since we adopted Ike this month, Kelly has had to learn to walk nicely together with him. And that has been a real challenge!

So this month we've been practicing walking nicely with another dog along for the walk. Kelly always wants to get ahead, and gets anxious if Ike walks faster than she does. Or they get tangled up in each other's leashes. Or he wants to play or run and she wants to boss him around.

We usually start off with Kelly in the lead, but Ike is a bigger boy and walks faster, so sometimes he moves ahead. When Kelly gets anxious, I usually ask her to "sit" and distract her. If I pick up the pace, it only seems to heighten her anxiety. They key seems to be to keep her mind active. Sometimes we take an unexpected turn or change direction. Sometimes we jog for a stretch and then slow it down and walk.

Now the two dogs are doing nicely walking together. Ike is learning not to pull on his harness. Kelly is learning to share the sidewalk. We all take a nice morning walk, and an evening walk, and sometimes one in between as well. This is just one way of getting fit, healthy....and tired dogs.

Kol’s Notes and Peggy’s Pet Place and You Did What with Your Wiener are the official co-hosts of K9 Kamp, a fitness challenge aimed at fighting pet obesity. K9 Kamp happens a couple of times  year, however, we believe that canine fitness should be something you work on year-round. This is where Keeping Up With K9 Kamp comes in. Check out Keeping Up with K9 Kamp for a challenge on the first Friday of every month, and check back in with your results on the last Friday of every month.

A Parade of Dogs

Fit Dog Friday, hosted by Peggy's Pet Place, Slimdoggy, and To Dog with Love, is a weekly place to blog about ways you and your dog get fit and active together!

Here's a different way to get active with your dog--join a parade!

Two dogs enjoy "canoeing" on the Boy Scout float.

I saw these dogs in the Fourth of July parade in Clifton Park, NY yesterday. The parade route gave the dogs (those who weren't riding!) a nice workout. I worried about the heat and the hot pavement on their paws, but at the end of the route, the Mid-Hudson Tri-County Animal Rescue Services provided a dog cooling station with bowls and water available as well.
A chocolate lab joins the Scouts.

Patriotic girl and her pooch.

I think they were just walking along, but hey, it's a dog!

Don't forget to hop over to You Did What With Your Wiener today for the first Keeping up with K9 Kamp mini challenge! Chester and Gretel have fun in store for us.

* Have you been using your Slimdoggy app? It's a great companion to K9Kamp. You can track your dog's daily activities and calories burned, as well as how many calories they're eating. One cool tool is the GPS tracking. You can click, take a walk, and the app automatically tracks how far you've gone and how many calories you've burned your walk. No need to do any head-numbing calculating yourself. The app's food list is also impressive. Click on your dog's food and you'll see how it ranks from 1(low) to 10 (high) pawprints, how many calories per cup, and the list of ingredients. Our dog food, Innova Senior Plus ranked 9.9 pawprints! yay!

There's also a Slimdoggy widget available for your website! We have ours here.

* Don't forget the Grrrreat K9Kamp prizes! Enter for our prize package worth $200! Prizes include:

Nitelze glowing LED fetch ball

Spotlit LED collar light

Welcome to K9 Kamp, sponsored by Peggy's Pet Place and Kol's Notes! We're so excited that you've joined us. K9 Kamp is open to EVERYONE, and we're going to have a great time!

Each year we've issued a fitness challenge for you and your dogs, and we have to admit they've gotten pretty creative. This year we've decided to make our challenge just as fun, but more flexible. We believe that fitness should be an everyday focus, but it means something different to everyone. You should do the things you and your dog love to do together. But we won't let you off THAT easy!

THE CHALLENGE:
Get active with your dog in the way of your choice, 30 extra minutes at least 3 times a week*
AND Our THEME for you to focus your challenge activities around is summer sunshine! The weather is turning nice (when it's not too hot!) and it's a perfect time to get outside and enjoy the fresh air and boundless possibilities with your dog.

Possible Activities:
Walking
Running
Agility
Swimming
Training exercises
You name it!

(*Please consult your veterinarian if you have ANY questions about your dog's health or fitness capacity. Adjust times to you and your dog's needs...for some senior dogs or dogs with certain conditions, it may not be safe to get active for as long, while dogs who are already active may require more.)
C'mon Mom, let's get moving!

Okay so simply decide upon your activity or activities, keep track of your progress, and report in on ANY FITDOG FRIDAY and link up to let us know how it's going. Then, on June 21 come back on the last day of Kamp and share your results. How did it go? What worked for you? What didn't work?

What else is going on?
*We'll feature posts on fitness and nutrition to keep you going.
* 14 Featured Bloggers will also be posting about their Kamp experience on their blogs
* We'll introduce you to our 14 Featured Bloggers in longer interviews throughout the year!
* Our Official Trainer, K9 Fit Club, will offer exercise instruction How-To's for you to follow along
* Don't miss special tweets and tips that might pop up on social media
*Oh yeah, and we have a great prize package valued at more than $200 including:

An EzyDog Vario6 Leash & Fold-a-Bowl
