Brooks Books- Rescue Me, Maybe

Brooks' Books
Book Reviews for Pet Lovers

Today's Book:
Rescue Me, Maybe
by Jackie Bouchard
genre: Women's fiction

I've been a fan of Jackie Bouchard's writing ever since her first book, What the Dog Ate. Her new release, Rescue Me, Maybe delivers the same skillful plotting, believable characters, and sense of humor. And of course, dogs too!

Rescue Me, Maybe is about people, relationships, and what happens when life gets messy and confusing...and the role dogs can play in our lives. You know the saying: Did you rescue the dog or did the dog rescue you? Well that's what this book is about too. It's about Jane, a woman who is not sure she really needs--or wants--rescuing. And the dog who needs her as much as she needs the dog. I always believe that the bond between human and dog is mutually beneficially. Rescue Me, Maybe illustrates this poignantly.

Jackie's talent and wit are on display in the sincere and funny lists the narrator creates each night before falling asleep. From "Ways I was a terrible wife, or rather...ways my mother in law would say I was a terrible wife." to insults perpetrated against her (including being given a vacuum cleaner for a gift), to good points about her new rescue dog.

The dog in the story, Maybe, is so sweet you just want to reach through and give him a hug. I'm really glad she wrote about canine cancer, because it's an important issue and sadly, one I can relate to personally.

Rescue Me, Maybe is a sweet, thoughtful book, I highly recommend.

I recently had the opportunity to interview Jackie and find out a little more about what went into creating the book.

Q: You deal with some heavy topics in Rescue Me, Maybe. How did you balance that so the book wouldn't become depressing?

It's natural for me to deal with serious topics through humor. I'm not the best person in the world for dealing with sad/scary/depressing things, so trying to make jokes to get through the hard stuff is how I roll. Most of my family is like that, so it's what I was brought up on! This sounds terrible, but when my mom was in the hospital after having heart surgery, my brother was sending us all the most hysterical emails. It's just our messed up way! To paraphrase what Jane says in the book: I can't help it - when things get serious, I start making jokes. But that can be a fine line too, because you don't want to make too light of things. It definitely was something I worked at keeping in balance - the humor along with the sad parts.

Also, I knew I wanted the book to have an ultimately happy and hopeful feel to it, even though it deals with topics like death and cancer. I know so many people whose dogs have had cancer, and it's so devastating when you get the news, but they're doing amazing things now. I do think there is still hope when you get news like that, and I wanted to share that message.

Q: Was Maybe based on your own dog? Did you have a dog who dealt with cancer?

Yes, Maybe is based on my own dog, Abby - and that's her on the cover. Maybe's personality is every bit Abby, who was a big life-loving nut! The other dog in the book, Barnum (who has passed away from cancer when the story starts), is based on our first dog, Bailey. Both Bailey and Abby had cancer, but their situations were quite different. We found out when Bailey was 12 that she had a tumor on her heart. We were devastated. We could have tried radiation, but she hated going to the vet so much, there was just no way we would consider putting her through all those appointments. We did try one procedure that they suggested to us, saying it could give us an extra 2 months to 1 year with her. We got 2 months to the day. She was very loved and we still miss her so much!

On the other hand (paw?), Abby got bone cancer at a very young age - only 15 months old. Also, being a mutt, we just weren't expecting that at all. We thought she was just limping from an overuse injury. Unlike Bailey, Abby loved going to the vet. She loved pretty much everyone she ever met, so she was happy to go anywhere and meet new people. So we did chemo with her and she did very well on it, with not much in the way of side effects. We also used a lot of holistic supplements, so I always say we took a "halflistic" approach with her (since it wasn't wholly holistic).

When someone gets a cancer diagnosis for their pup, there are often different options available - surgery, chemo, radiation, holistic treatments, etc. It can be so hard to know what to do - especially because your gut instinct is to try to do everything you can do (and whatever you can afford) to try and make it better. But I think you have to consider what your dog can handle and what's realistic. There are no wrong answers because whatever your decision, it's made out of your love for your dog.

Hopefully some day they'll find a cure for this horrible disease because I know so many pups - and people - who have been affected by it.

Q: Your two books feature a marriage in trouble. Will your next book feature a happy marriage?!

Oh gosh, I have to start by saying how much it distresses my wonderful hubby that my first book featured a husband who cheats, and my second book features a woman who loved her dog more than her husband! I love the hubs very much - he's my best friend - so I'm sorry that he's so distressed! And, yes, my next book does have a happily married couple! But... again... the first sentence (which I'm not ready to share) is something funny the husband does, and that also distresses my poor hubby! Another book I'm working on is about a woman who's been divorced for a long time.

Unfortunately, fiction is all about the conflict. Happy marriages make for a wonderful life, but they can make for a very boring book! I would say the hubs and I are very happily married, but, dang, our life would make the most boring book ever! That's why I had to drop Abby's story into another fictional woman's life!

Find the book on Amazon.

* I was provided with a copy of this book in return for my honest review. And, in full disclosure, I helped the author come up with the title of the book. Unfortunately, I can't take credit for anything else about the book, although I'd like to, it's that good!

Brooks' Books- Here's a Dog Who Loves a Healthy Life

Brooks here: A while back Mom reviewed the beautiful book, Pukka, the Pup After Merle. Many of you may be familiar with Merle's Door, the inspiring bestselling book by Ted Kerasote. At the time, Pukka had a lot to teach us about being a puppy.

Now, he's all grown up (and a very handsome yellow lab, at that.) Pukka's Promise contains important information for keeping us--your best friends--as healthy and happy as possible. This book is the perfect for both our Valentine's week posts about love, and Responsible Pet Owner's Month. Here's Mom with the rest of the review:

Peggy: When Ted Kerasote's beloved dog Merle died too soon, he knew he'd want to give his new puppy the longest life possible. What followed was questioning, researching, interviewing, observing, and gathering the must accurate, respected and responsible data to define real-life tactics we can all take to help give our dogs what they need. Using the latest research, he helps us rethink the everyday choices we make for our dogs:
* How many vaccines are too many?
*Can a purebred be as healthy as a mixed breed?
*Is raw food healthier than kibble?
*Should we feed our dogs bones?
*Should we rethink spaying and neutering?

I especially enjoyed the sections on vaccinations, because I've heard of several dogs suffering negative reactions. And what to feed your dog is always an important, and difficult, topic.

Because Kerastoe masterfully weaves in stories of himself and Pukka, and presents the information in a friendly manner, it is never dry or difficult to grasp. I came away from the book feeling like I'd just had a conversation with someone who loves animals and wants all animals to be healthy and happy. Pukka's Promise gives me cause to rethink some of my previous opinions, and feel supported in other decisions. An intelligent and heartwarming read.

Amazon: Pukka's Promise

Watch this video A Day in the Life of Pukka. I love how he runs through the snow! Now that's a fit and healthy dog. Do you think he can resist chasing the moose?

Brooks' Books- A Cat Who's Almost as Smart As Me

Brooks here. I'm a lucky dog to have read two great books this month, both about LOVE. Today I'm reviewing Love Saves the Day. Gwen Cooper is an awesome author whose previous book is one of mom's favorites. You may have read Homer's Odyssey, a memoir about Gwen and her blind cat.

After so many people told Gwen that their favorite part of Homer's Odyssey was the way she "talked for" Homer, Gwen felt inspired to write a new book, a novel, Love Saves the Day. Whew! We've been reading stories by a lot of very smart animals lately! Well, I have never met a real cat (can you believe it?) so I especially enjoyed this opportunity to glimpse the way they think. Sure are curious critters. I absolutely recommend this book. Okay, here's Mom with the rest of the review.

Peggy: If you're suffering from a lack of inspiring reading material starring felines, then Love Saves the Day to the rescue! Author Gwen Cooper has a profound understanding of cats and a delightful ability to paint a scene.

The story revolves around Prudence, a thoughtful brown tabby with white socks. She lives with Sarah in New York City until one day, Sarah doesn't come home. The author lovingly shares Prudence's world as the cat faithfully waits for her beloved person to return, grieves, and deals with the transition of living with Sarah's daughter and her new husband. The characters are deep and believable. I felt drawn into Prudence's worries, fears and triumphs.

Love Saves the Day is about a daughter healing after the loss of her mother, a new husband and wife learning to adapt to marriage, and how the love of an animal can make us all better humans.

Ultimately, this is a book about LOVE.

Cat parents will relate to Prudence's musings (mewsings?) on The Bad Place (the vet's office) and The Monster (the vacuum). Heartbreaking, heartwarming and heartfelt, Love Saves the Day is a beautiful story that stays with me....maybe even as I contemplate adopting a cat!
I highly recommend Love Saves the Day.

 *New York Times Bestselling Author
* The First Novel Narrated by a Cat
* Inspired by a Real Cat, Gwen's cat Scarlett who will be familiar to readers of Homer's Odyssey.

Brooks' Books- How to Cause Mischief

Brooks here! I've got an awesome book for you today. It's not going to take you a long time to read. It's full of pictures of dogs doing lots of cute things. And, if you're a dog like me, you're going to learn something really valuable! How to cause mischief. What's not to love?

 Here's Mom with the review:

One of the all-time cutest dogs in Blogville might also be one of the most mischievous. How do I know? Because he wrote the book! If you haven't yet read the book Mischief Master Class by Snoopy and Annette Vivian, then you should hurry right now and get a copy, because it's most likely the cutest book you'll ever read!

*Image courtesy of Snoopy's Dog Blog.
Snoopy (left) is a 2 year old Bearded Collie therapy dog and Master of Mischief. He wants all dogs to listen to that little voice, the Mischief Whsiperer, and to know that you don't have to grow out of mischief when you grow up.

Here are some of Snoopy's rules:

* Look cute when you get busted
* Hide the evidence
*Get a good accomplice

Snoopy even lined up help from his friends to tell their mischief tales
Freddy
Leroy and Sherman
Bert
Baily
Dakota
Sugar
Sampson
Daisy
Jasmine
and more!
And full disclosure, Kelly has a story in there too about her mischief chasing ducks, and there's even a story in there about my mom's black labs Topper and Chief and how they ate an entire chocolate cake and hid the evidence.

Full of 100 color photos of Snoopy and friends caught in the act! In the end, you get your own certificate of mischief! And, 50% of the proceeds of the book benefits therapy dogs.

Brooks Books- Dogs of Courage

Brooks here. Would you like to read a book about hero dogs? Then I've got the book for you: Dogs of Courage, the Heroism and Heart of Working Dogs Around the World by Lisa Rogak. Of course, I think all dogs are heroes.
Here's Mom with the review:

Me:  Dogs of Courage by Lisa Rogak (St. Martin's Press Griffin 2012) describes the many different jobs performed by service and working dogs.  From police dogs to search and rescue dogs to guide dogs to therapy dogs, these are the stories of dogs who spend their lives helping and serving people.

The book explains the duties, care, and training of dozens of varieties of working dogs. It also includes touching stories of dogs including:

* Apollo, an apricot Standard Poodle, helped bring a 10-year-old girl out of a coma.

* Bilbo, a Newfoundland, a canine lifeguard and "Pet Hero of the Year."

* Sheba, a Rottweiler, rescued nine puppies that had been buried alive.

Rogak acknowledges that some people feel dogs shouldn't work, and that they deserve to be fed, cuddled and spoiled only. However, she explains, many dogs are happiest when they have a purpose, and are allowed to do what they were born to do. "Dogs should have a chance to prove they are a hero."

Basic introductory information here, but the topic is interesting and so are the different dogs and the many ways they help humans. These dogs truly are heroes.

Brooks Books- Dogs on Wheels

Hi Brooks here! The book I found for you today is called Dogs on Wheels, Traveling with your canine companion. I can tell you already that I highly approve of this book, since I like traveling with Mom and Dad. Here's Mom to tell you more!

Me: Dogs on wheels by Norm Mort, published by Hubble and Hattie (c) 2012
This book starts with an interesting introduction to the evolution of dogs, and the way people tend to humanize their dogs. This all leads up to the point that we like taking our dogs places with us, and in most cases dogs enjoy it too.

Because Hubble and Hattie is an imprint of an automobile publishing house (Veloce Inc.) you will find plenty of authoritative information  here on which types of vehicles are best suited for dogs, with lots of pertinent details-- effect of heating and cooling for the rear compartments, safety of the passenger area in case of emergencies, and considering the height of the windows for seeing out. Various makes and model cars are discussed in detail. If you're in the market for a new car, this chapter would be of great benefit to you.

Other chapters include traveling safety, airbags, travel accessories, and handling dog fears and phobias such as car sickness, claustrophobia and anxiety. There's even a chapter on traveling with your dog on a motorcycle or in a motorcycle sidecar!

The books ends with a chapter on dogs in art and advertising, including numerous car ads that include dogs, and mentions of books and films that include dogs who like to travel in cars.

While the actual "how to travel with your dog" information in this book isn't particularly new or revealing, Dogs on Wheels is a unique book combining two interests. This book would be the perfect gift for the car enthusiast who also loves dogs.

Brooks Books- A Dog Named Leaf

Brooks here. I'm always sniffing up the best books about my canine brothers and sisters. And I found a really special one for you today. It's about the special healing capacity of dogs. Well, I know all about that. I was lucky enough to help my human dad heal from a medical situation. Us dogs are great at that, aren't we? I think you should get this book and read all about cocker spaniel Leaf. I'll let my mom tell you the rest.

**Keep Reading! We're giving away 3 copies of the book at the end!!

A Dog Named Leaf
The Hero from Heaven Who Saved My Life
by Allen and Linda Anderson
Release date: November 6, 2012

There are books about dogs helping people. And books about people helping dogs. The best books, however, are about a mutual relationship-- the dog and the person both saving and being saved. Former police officer Allen Anderson and cocker spaniel Leaf's lives come together at just the right time.

"Our paths had crossed at exactly the right place, the right time, and under the right circumstance for us to help each other heal."

Allen thoughtfully relates his anxieties about his upcoming brain surgery, fearing the possibility of sudden death or severe disability. Thoughts of doctors opening up his skull and operating on the very delicate control center of his mind and body consumed him with nightmares. Gradually, thoughts of Leaf--who had revealed himself to be wise and empathetic-- took over Allen's disturbing thoughts. At the same time, Allen gently helped Leaf transform from a fearful dog who growled at strangers and bit the groomer to a friendly, confident and happy companion.

A Dog Named Leaf is a beautiful story told with honesty and depth. You'll be changed by Allen and Leaf's journey. This book will fill you with hope.

Linda and Allen Anderson are speakers, authors, and founders of Angel Animal Network.

Brooks Books- A Fistful of Collars

Book:  A Fistful of Collars
by Spencer Quinn
Atria Books (c) 2012

BROOKS:  I LOVE Chet the dog, hero of A Fistful of Collars, fifth in the fabulous Chet and Bernie Mystery Series. Seriously, I wish Chet and I were bros. I want to tag along with him on all his adventures. For those of you who don't know, Chet is the canine partner of detective Bernie Little. Honestly, I don't know where Bernie would be without Chet. How could that mixed-up two-legger fight crime and find the bad guys without my boy Chet? Speaking of which, if you wonder what kind of dog Chet is, he's a mixed breed. I'd like to think he has a little golden retriever, like me, in him. That would just make him even more awesome!

I'm a huge fan of this series, and A Fistful of Collars is no exception. I hang on every word Chet barks. Yup, he's the narrator, and boy does he have a story to tell. So do yourself a favor and pick up A Fistful of Collars, and if you don't have the rest of the series, don't forget to get The Dog Who Knew Too Much, To Fetch a Thief, Thereby Hangs a Tail, and Dog On It as well!

Me: A Fistful of Collars is like taking a wild, crazy romp with a dog you love, letting your dog take the lead and never knowing where he's going to take you! With Chet the Dog guiding (or dragging) you along, you are sure to be in for a little mystery, a little drama, and a fistful of fun!

Here's Brooks with the book, and his own fistful of collars.
Quinn's canine tone is spot on, with his engaging style grabs you and never lets go--kind of like Brooks and his tennis ball. In A Fistful of Collars, Bernie and Chet are hired to keep bad boy movie star, Thad Perry, out of trouble. Of course, nothing is as easy or obvious as it seems, and they're soon involved in a mystery that will leave you in suspense, while at the same time laughing out loud. For you cat lovers, there's even a cat, Brando, in the mix. Hmmm, do you think he's a good guy or a bad guy?

This book has everything going for it. I'm already sitting up and begging for the next book in the series.

Brooks Books- Jimmy Mender and his Miracle Dog

This week is book review week, so please come back every day to read about another great dog or pet book! Today I'm reviewing Jimmy Mender and his Miracle Dog by Leland Dirks and Angelo Dirks. Read on for a chance to win a copy of your own!

BROOKS: Miracle Dog? Now that's a dog I'd like to meet in real life! And that is what really drew me into this book. The best parts were about Phannie, the miracle dog. We first meet her when she's traipsing along the road, and she has someplace to go.

"Along a highway in northeastern Nevada, a sort of shadow moved. A dog with a purpose ran at night to avoid the heat of day. She knew where she was going. She just didn't know how long it would take to get there.
In the daytime, when she slept, she got glimpses of the man she was pursuing. She had to hurry."

I like reading about other dogs, especially ones on a special mission. I won't tell you what Phannie's mission turns out to be, you'll have to read for yourself. But of course, true to dog nature, she ends up helping the man. Good dog!

ME: Leland's writing is strong and his imagination vivid in this engaging story of Paul Young and his trek of discovery. The story takes you along on a journey of love and loss that will tug at your heart. As always, Leland's at his best when describing man's relationship with dog. I love the protagonist Paul's intuitive connection with border collie Phannie.

A little adventure, a little magic, a little dog story, a little love, a little "what might have been"...Jimmy Mender and His Miracle Dog is a book you won't want to put down. You can get the book on Kindle or paperback on Amazon.

GIVEAWAY!!!  And now, here's a chance to win a copy of your own! Just leave a comment below answering the question: What is one miracle you'd like to see a dog perform? What the Dog Ate vs Dieting with my Dog

My blogging pal Jackie Bouchard of Pooch Smooches just released her new book, What the Dog Ate. See it there on the table?
Brooks and Kelly check out What the Dog Ate

One day Jackie and I got laughing, thinking about how our two books related. Sure, there are some obvious differences...What the Dog Ate is a novel, and Dieting with my Dog is memoir. Kona of What the Dog Ate consumes a wide variety from the non-food group (just see the chart, below!), while my pup Kelly learns to eat healthy, nutritious snacks. But basically, both books celebrate dogs, eating, and overcoming life's challenges.

Read on for your chance to win a copy of BOTH books!
But first, here's our review of What the Dog Ate.

Brooks:
Right away I loved this title. I mean, What the Dog Ate? Seriously, there's a whole book about this? Yum! And may I also add, I seriously love the book's hero, Kona. Now he's my kind of dude. Okay, now over to Mom.

Me:
Brooks, this isn't a "how to," you know. Please don't eat all those things Kona did. What the Dog Ate is a warm, funny novel about Maggie Baxter, who thinks she has life's priorities in order. She lives with her husband of seventeen years and their chocolate lab, Kona. But Kona unwittingly reveals Maggie's husband's cheating ways. Let's just say, what the dog ate--and brought back up--plays a key role by way of  incriminating evidence.

Maggie deals with family, friends, divorce, and job pressures, all the while trying to carve out the best life for her and Kona. The question is, will she find a new man in her life?
From the  book: "On the way home, she fantasized about how much better it would be if finding a  new man was    like getting a dog. You could go online and research the type you wanted. Would you prefer one who'd be a couch-potato with you? Or one that would fit into an active lifestyle? Toy or worker? Purebred or mutt? More influenced by scent or sight? Guard or companion?"

If you like a story of love and romance, with a great dog for a best friend, then What the Dog Ate is for you! Brooks and I highly recommend you check it out!

Brooks Books- Lucky Dog Matchmaking Service

Brooks here: Today I'm reviewing The Lucky Dog Matchmaking Service by Beth Kendrick. (NAL Trade Paperback 2012) The best thing about this book is that there are a lot of dogs! And, a really kind woman who rescues dogs, hates puppy mills and helps us dogs find homes. Oh, and the dogs were naughty too. I like that! Now here's mom with some more.

* Read on for your chance to win a copy of the book!

Peggy: In the first chapter it seems like the main character, Lara, is making matches between men and women. Then we make the charming discovery that she is matching people with dogs. I thought this book would be mainly about the matches and the interesting people and dogs Lara puts together. It turns out, however, that there is not so much matchmaking as I thought. In fact, it seems she does more dog training than matchmaking. Even so, her situations are not only entertaining, but also contain some useful tips for pet parents.

Hey Brooks, I can read books too!

The book also deals with Lara's relationship with her detached mother--which felt genuine and touching-- and her boyfriend, who was frustrated by Lara's zealous overcommitment to dogs and rescue. My favorite scene was when her boyfriend did something unforgivable with her needy rescue dog's only toy, and Lara had to choose between her distraught rescue dog and the man in her life.

I think you'll enjoy this book and cheer on Lara as she advocates for dogs everywhere!

Brooks gives The Lucky Dog Matchmaking Service 4 out of 5 wags!

Okay, now for the giveaway! Leave a comment below telling about how you and your dog were matched up...or, if you prefer, what you think your perfect canine match would be. One winner will be selected at random, except where prohibited, and announced Friday. Contest open until Thursday 8/9/12 at 11:59pm. Good luck!

Brooks Books-- Enchanting Lily

Brooks here, with another book review, this time about a cat. I know, I know...Brooks usually likes to chase cats under parked cars in the neighborhood, not read about them. But, in this case he happily made an exception.

READ ON to ENTER to WIN one of TWO COPIES of ENCHANTING LILY  by Anjali Banerjee!

If you like fiction, and cats, and a little bit of romance, then this book is for you. I love fiction, and I like cats, but I am also really surprised that I liked this book because it is a little bit quirky...it involves ghosts and spirits and such.

Brooks and I are not fans of ghostly type stories, but this was done in such a gentle way, not spooky and scary, but almost matter of fact. Because of that, we didn't mind that part at all. Plus, it is the cat--not the people-- who senses these spirits and seems to understand what they are feeling. I thought that the cat parts were sweet and touching, adding an interesting depth to the tale. Brooks says it figures that a cat would get all weird about spirits and such.

The story is about a young widow named Lily who needs a new start in her life. The setting in the Pacific Northwest is vivid and beautifully detailed, as are Lily's vintage clothing boutique and the residents of her new little town. Then a mysterious white cat with one blue eye and one green eye arrives.  "Lily thought she saw an aura, a subtle rainbow of color surrounding the cat, as if the creature was not of this world..."

Thus Lily begins a journey of healing. Saved by the hidden graces of others, she even allows herself to fall in love again. Brooks gives Enchanting Lily 4 out of 5 wags. I think this is partially because there was not a major dog character.

If you're looking for a bit of a quirky read, that is light, well-written, imaginative, and hopeful, then pick up Enchanting Lily. The book will be released on August 7th... but you could win a copy here right now! Just leave a comment below and tell me why you'd like to win this book. I'd be delighted if you also  followed this blog and liked my facebook page too, if you haven't already. Tell me that you did and you'll get another entry. Thanks! And good luck! Two winners will be announced on Wednesday's blog.

Cat Speak Book Giveaway

Cats? Really?
Do you know what your cat is saying to you? How does he perceives his surroundings?
What does it mean when her ears are flat against her head?

Cat Speak, Recognising and Understanding Behaviour by Brigitte Rauth-Widmann (ISBN 978-1-845843-85-4, $19.95 US/9.99 UK, published by Hubble & Hattie), answers all these questions and more. This book helps us to understand the meanings of different cat vocalizations and body language. With clear descriptions and more than 130 color photographs, it's a must-read for cat lovers. ***Read on to learn how to WIN your own copy of this great book!***

Rauth-Widmann is author of numerous books about animals, hundreds of articles in The German Dog and Cats Extra magazines (Germany). She lives in Westerwald Germany with her family and 20 rabbits, 9 free-to-roam cats and 4 dogs (Labrador and Vizslas).

I could really use this book because I'd love to understand cats better. They can be an enigma. I must admit I don't understand my daughter's cat Cinnamon. Why is she so aloof? Why does she sometimes bite my daughter for seemingly no reason? And why does she hiss at me? (Trust me, she's a sweet cat, even if she bites and hisses!)

Dog Speak

For the best dog-human relationship, I want to understand what my dog is telling me. To do that, I need to understand her body language. I know when her tail's wagging and her body's relaxed, she's happy. When she lies on her back with her belly exposed she feels secure. I've seen her "play bow" when she wants to play.  But I'm only brushing the surface here.

That's why I was delighted to discover this gem of a book, Dog Speak by Christiane Blenski (ISBN 978-1-845843-84-7, $19.95 US/9.99 UK, published by Hubble & Hattie.) It couldn't have come at a more opportune time, as we've been introducing Kelly to potential new dogs and I want to understand how the two dogs get along together.

The book is divided into three sections: The Polite Dog, The Aggressive Dog, The Talking Dog. Each page is full of excellent photographs of dogs reacting and interacting together to illustrate the points. I enjoyed the first section about the greeting ritual.
When a dog sees another dog, he it may sprint toward the stranger.
Then, a polite dog will approach diagonally and walk around the side, not head-on.
Then the dogs will walk around, sniff, strut, attempt to place his head on the other dog's back, etc.
During this ritual, the book suggests that the people not stare, call their dog or interfere so that the dogs can go through this ritual undisturbed.
If both dogs have decided that they like each other, you will see their bodies relax, tails wag, ears back and eyes moving side to side.
I learned more about how to tell if dogs like each other, dislike each other or are just disinterested.

One of the most common mistakes when trying to understand "dog talk" is anthropomorphism, or assuming they feel the same way as people do. When you read this book you'll get a much better understanding of what is really going on in various situations by the way the dog is holding her ears, tail, her facial expressions, whether she is panting or barking, etc.

Dog Speak goes beyond the basics and gives you a deep-down understanding. There are sections for dogs and dogs, dogs and people, puppies and older dogs, and problem solving. This is an extremely helpful book, written in a fun, clear way. It will help you understand not only what your dog is saying, but also ways to respond in ways that will help your dog, and strengthen your bond.

I was provided with a copy of Dog Speak for review, but the opinions are 100% my own.

Heart to Heart, Hand in Paw

My new book!
Animals Heal. That's something I've witnessed, experienced, and written about. A deep and emotional topic. I love learning how dogs guide the blind, comfort the ill, sense seizures, and sniff out cancer. I've written about how a miniature horse helps a little girl. A cat helps a young couple. And now, I'm excited to announce my greatest work about how animals heal, my new book

Heart to Heart, Hand in Paw
How one woman finds hope and faith through the healing love of animals.

This is the true story of Luanne, a Vermont woman in her middle years, who dreams of living a simple life in the beautiful country with her second husband. They struggle to build their own log cabin tap maple trees, and fill their little farm with animals. However:

• the dog has separation anxiety
 • the goose is afraid of water
• there's a fox in the pig pen and raccoons in the henhouse
 • their homesick donkey cries all night
 • and their truck has somehow slipped into the pond
One of Luanne's sheep

And from there things only get worse! Drawing upon a lifetime of meaningful relationships with animals, Luanne finds the courage to persevere. Luanne's story shares how our pets can love, comfort and teach us as we take our own journeys through life.

Heart to Heart, Hand in Paw is my second book, just released and available on Amazon, your favorite bookseller, and through Inspiring Voices website. It's also available in e-book. I hope you'll check it out (and if it looks good maybe give it a "like" on Amazon, too! Thanks!) And watch for my blog contest soon, where I'll be giving away a copy of the book.

*You can keep up with news about this book and more on my new Facebook page. I'd love to see you there and it would be fun to hear about your bond with your special pets there too!

I is for In a Dog's Heart

Pawing through the Alphabet

I is for In a Dog's Heart

This book by Jennifer Arnold is subtitled "What our dogs need, want and deserve--and the gifts we can expect in return." Really, is there much else you want to know about dogs?

I absolutely love this book, and I wish everyone could read it! So mush so, that I'm giving away a free copy at the end of the blog post today. So keep reading for your chance to win!

Jennifer Arnold is founder and executive director of Canine Assistants, a service-dog school in Georgia. In order to run such a successful organization, Jennifer really understands dogs and the relationship between pet and pet parent. She sees herself as "a relataionship expert who improves communication between humans and dogs in the process, betters the quality of life for both."

One thing In a Dog's Heart helps us to understand is the very destructive nature of negative training methods some people use. Jennifer's organization never teaches using fear or force. She's developed a positive training methodology called Choice Teaching, which "lends to calm, well-mannered dogs who respect their human partners and enjoy doing as asked."

The book advocates building a strong bond with your pet which will give you the patience to "guide your dog through life on Planet Human, when he doesn't speak the language or understand the customs." Some of the steps the author explains are:
* Try to see the world through your dog's eyes
*Understand that your dog's perspective is quite different from your own
*Listen to your dog
*Be your dog's advocate

There is a wealth of information in this book about how to keep your dog safe and healthy, and how to deal with various behavioral problems.

So what do dogs want? According to Jennifer, "dogs simply want to be happy, and they want us to be happy with them." And what does a pet parent want? This book!

In a Dog's Heart is available on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, or your favorite bookstore! Also available is NYTimes bestseller, Through a Dog's Eyes.
