Need a great New Year's Resolution?  PetsMove.org is offering dog owners around the world an opportunity to exercise with and learn from leading canine fitness experts during its first Move Your Mutt: Virtual Human and Canine Exercise and Health Expo scheduled for January 1-4, 2014.

I resolve to move my mutt...and move my butt!

Why not resolve to get yourself and your pet moving in 2014. You can track your activities on PetsMove.org and update your dog’s weight at least once a month so you can keep track of your progress throughout the year.

Kelly urges me to get moving!

Expo events include:

* Educational videos from industry experts on canine fitness, food, and wellness - Video presenters include a keynote address from Dr. Katy Nelson on the role of exercise and nutrition on overall pet health and wellness.

* Virtual exhibitor booths with top brands offering the best products for canine health and fitness.

* Mutt-a-thon virtual workout for Petsmove member - Move Your Mutt participants will have an opportunity to join other dog owners from around the world for a virtual workout during the inaugural Mutt-a-thon.

* Mutt-a-thon participants commit to 30 minutes or more of vigorous exercise with their pet on January 4 at 9 a.m. local time. Exercise choices can include running, biking, brisk walking, chase or even a structured workout like those available at K9 Fit Clubs.

For those who cannot attend, all the information and resources will be available on-demand for a limited time following the event.

“We want to grow the PetsMove Virtual Event and Move Your Mutt-a-thon into a nationally-recognized, reoccurring event embraced by all dog owners,” said Steve Pelletier, co-founder of PetsMove.org. “We are excited for this year’s event and the many, varied opportunities it brings to help people and their pets live longer, healthier lives.”

Let's Move....Pets Move!

One of our Featured Bloggers for K9 Kamp last session was Steve Pelletier. Many of you probably know Steve and Slimdoggy Jack. They're very active, promoting health and fitness for your dogs, and very helpful and kind too.

They do a bang-up job over at Slimdoggy, so I hope you pay them a visit.
Slimdoggy Jack was once a hyper, obese, unhealthy rescue dog...and now he's at a healthy weight and a strong workout buddy!

In addition to sharing detailed accurate and helpful posts on fitness and pet food ingredients, Steve created the Slimdoggy App. This is a useful tool for determining how much your dog should eat, based on calories consumed and activity level. It's a great way to help keep your dog at a healthy weight. To check it out, you can see the Slimdoggy Widget on our sidebar.

And now, Steve has pioneered Pets Move, an online community to help encourage each other to get our pets fit!

"It is costing pet owners time (their dogs life spans are shortened by 2 years) and money (hundreds if not thousands of dollars each year) to have an overweight dog." Steve says. "This is a serious, yet manageable problem to address." Pets Move provides fun tracking tools, leader boards and prizes, and a member community all of which help support people as they begin their efforts to get their pets more fit. You'll meet new friends and improve your dog's health, and your own as well!

Add caption
You can register on the PetsMove.org site and then log & track your dog’s activities.  But instead of calorie counting, you'll collect "paws" and will use these paws toward reward prizes throughout the program. Also, enter the Pets Move video contest for a chance to get a custom pet fitness and feeding program, some great canine fitness products, and a chance to appear on The Pet Show with TV personality and veterinarian, Dr. Katy Nelson on ABC TV in Washington DC.

Steve says, "We humans are stewards of our dog’s health and well-being and overall, as a nation (and a world) we are failing our beloved pets.  With Pets Move, we aim to change that."

FitDog Friday Mini Challenge and Slimdoggy

This month we're participating in the first Keeping up with K9 Kamp mini challenge, hosted by Chester and Gretel at YDWWYW. The challenge was to determine if we were feeding our dog the right amount of food.

Kelly checks out the fridge for something good!

Even though our vet discussed with us how much to feed Kelly several years ago, things have changed since then. Kelly's older, less active, and other circumstances influence how much food she needs to stay healthy and not gain weight. We know from experience that when we've slipped and not paid attention to this, Kelly has put on a few pounds.

We used Slimdoggy app to find out how many calories Kelly should be eating.

I entered Kelly's current weight (32) and desired weight (32). Kelly is presently at, or just under, her desired weight. Since she is a mixed breed there is no specific standard weight, but according to the vet she is at a healthy weight.

I then entered her activity level. I chose Low Intensity. Although we do take two walks a day and romps in the back yard, Kelly is a senior and does a lot of sleeping!

The app indicated that we should feed Kelly 694 calories/day. I was surprised at the results, because this is actually more than the 1-1/2 cups of premium dog food that we feed her daily (3/4 cup twice a day). However she does make up for it in veggies and several healthy treats used for training and rewards. And since she has worked hard to slim down (from 42 lbs) and keep her weight off, I feel as if we are probably feeding the proper amount. Sometimes she does pester me for more food late at night, so I give her a small amount, what we call second dinner. This usually satisfies her.

As suspected, most of the treats I feed Kelly don't list calories. I was surprised at the suggested serving size. For instance, I have some jerky treats (made in the USA) that are certainly not small--about 6 inches long by 2 inches wide--suggest that I give a medium size dog such as Kelly 4 jerky treats a day! I can imagine that this would be a lot of calories!

I may try to increase the amount of her feedings slightly, while keeping tabs on her weight, to see if I can give her more calories without her gaining weight.

Here are some samples of the Slimdoggy app pages:

Thank you Slimdoggy for the great app!

* Have you been using your Slimdoggy app? It's a great companion to K9Kamp. You can track your dog's daily activities and calories burned, as well as how many calories they're eating. One cool tool is the GPS tracking. You can click, take a walk, and the app automatically tracks how far you've gone and how many calories you've burned your walk. No need to do any head-numbing calculating yourself. The app's food list is also impressive. Click on your dog's food and you'll see how it ranks from 1(low) to 10 (high) pawprints, how many calories per cup, and the list of ingredients. Our dog food, Innova Senior Plus ranked 9.9 pawprints! yay!

There's also a Slimdoggy widget available for your website! We have ours here.

* Don't forget the Grrrreat K9Kamp prizes! Enter for our prize package worth $200! Prizes include:

FitDog Friday and Park Day

Who's up for a little fun? Maybe a game of fetch, or tag? Or just a grand ol' romp in the grass. Since the weather is starting to get nicer, it's a great time to take your pal to the park and take a hike, a run, or just play together.

This is the favorite park where Kelly and Brooks liked to play.

Today is a double treat, because  in addition to being FitDog Friday, it's also Park Day, hosted by Terrier Torrent and Finn and Charley too.
FitDog Friday, Co-hosted by Peggy's Pet Place, SlimDoggy and To Dog with Love, is a fun weekly blog hop to encourage everyone to share our excitement and commitment to keeping our furry best friends fit and healthy! So it seems a perfect match for Park Day. Let's take advantage of this beautiful day, get outside and take our dogs to the park.

Kelly likes to run around.

But chasing a ball? Not her style!

I guess she'll save it for the retrievers.

Join the blog hop. Participants in FitDog Friday will be entered into a giveaway for a SlimDoggy frisbee and a Dieting with my Dog bookmark! (Two winners selected by Randomizer.)

FitDog Friday- How to Get More out of Your Walks Together

Raise the Roof for FitDog Friday! A blog hop for sharing news, tips and personal experiences on the topic of pet obesity and fitness, and ways you get active with your dog, co-hosted by Peggy's Pet Place and Slimdoggy.

We started this blog hop because we want to help spread the word about the positive ways people are working to solve the problems of pet obesity and stay fit and healthy with their dogs. We'll be here every Friday and we hope you'll join in!

Today I decided to blog about something most of us do with our dogs every day--take a walk.
Kelly and Brooks LOVE their walks, they dance by the front door when we say those magical words ("Wanna go for a walk?"), they try to grab their leashes off the hook, they spring out the door. But sometimes the walk gets a bit routine. Here are some ways to get more out of your walk together:

1. Take a different route-- If your walk is getting boring, try turning left instead of right. If you always go to the same park, try one across town. Meet a friend and walk in her neighborhood. Or even doing your same route backwards might give you a new outlook and put a spring in your step.

2. Carry weights-- Walking may give many dogs a good workout, but isn't always strenuous enough for us. Carry hand weights when you walk for an extra calorie burn.

3. Try intervals- You and your dog may not be up for a flat out run (yet), so try running for a short sprint, maybe one block or one minute, then walk for 5 minutes, then sprint again. If you and your dog are up for the challenge, you may find it breaks the boredom of the regular old walk and gets you both nice and fit.

4. Make it fun-- Whatever you do, be sure to make it fun for both of you--whatever that means for you and your dog!

Mobile App Helps Dogs Get Fit and Healthy

Steve and Jack. Look at Jack now!
 When Steve Pelletier adopted his
7- year-old yellow lab, Jack, the dog weighed 105 lbs. and was on Prozac (for anxiety and hyperactivity) and Rimadyl (pain reliever, often for arthritis). Jack was considered unadoptable- he'd been in the shelter for over a year before Steve and his family took a chance on him and devoted themselves to helping Jack reach a healthy weight.

Steve's story immediately touched me, for several reasons. One, because my husband and I had a yellow lab named Hudson who became obese. At the time, we didn't have the understanding we should about Hudson's diet and activity level. (Because I was then 30 lbs overweight myself, I hadn't made health and fitness a personal priority either.) And second, through my book Dieting with my Dog, I aim to inspire others to become fit and healthy with their pets, too.

If only I'd had Steve's app, SlimDoggy! I would have had a hands on, user friendly tool to guide me through everything I needed to know to help Hudson.

SlimDoggy is a mobile app which helps pet parents fight canine obesity and have happy and healthy dogs. The SlimDoggy App contains a calorie database of about 2,000 dog foods and allows for the tracking of the dog’s activity each day. You can input the amount of food you feed them each day, their activity levels, and SlimDoggy tells you automatically whether you are overfeeding or underfeeding. You never again have to guess how much to feed your dog!

Measuring my dog's food is one of the healthy habits I learned on my journey that helped our next dog after Hudson--our spaniel-mix, Kelly-- achieve success and take off  6 pounds and regain her girlish figure! SlimDoggy encourages pet parents to measure their dog's food as well (they even have a special SlimDoggy measuring cup in their store!)

Jack's tale is a success story. By understanding his dog's individual needs, Steve helped Jack slim down to 85 pounds in 3 months time. Jack is off both medications, and is now a happy and healthy dog– his behavioral problems disappeared as fast as his excess weight! And he loves to run with Steve!

Nearly half the dog in the U.S. are overweight or obese. SlimDoggy App tracks activities by intensity level, daily activity time, activity type, duration and distance, or through GPS. Their database contains dog food, snacks and people food (e.g. bacon) or you can add custom food. An "auto feed” function sets up a normal feeding so that you can set it and forget it.

SlimDoggy is committed to addressing both the dog obesity problem and the dog abandonment problem in the US. They donate a portion of their ongoing revenue to dog rescue organizations.
