Let's Move....Pets Move!

One of our Featured Bloggers for K9 Kamp last session was Steve Pelletier. Many of you probably know Steve and Slimdoggy Jack. They're very active, promoting health and fitness for your dogs, and very helpful and kind too.

They do a bang-up job over at Slimdoggy, so I hope you pay them a visit.
Slimdoggy Jack was once a hyper, obese, unhealthy rescue dog...and now he's at a healthy weight and a strong workout buddy!

In addition to sharing detailed accurate and helpful posts on fitness and pet food ingredients, Steve created the Slimdoggy App. This is a useful tool for determining how much your dog should eat, based on calories consumed and activity level. It's a great way to help keep your dog at a healthy weight. To check it out, you can see the Slimdoggy Widget on our sidebar.

And now, Steve has pioneered Pets Move, an online community to help encourage each other to get our pets fit!

"It is costing pet owners time (their dogs life spans are shortened by 2 years) and money (hundreds if not thousands of dollars each year) to have an overweight dog." Steve says. "This is a serious, yet manageable problem to address." Pets Move provides fun tracking tools, leader boards and prizes, and a member community all of which help support people as they begin their efforts to get their pets more fit. You'll meet new friends and improve your dog's health, and your own as well!

Add caption
You can register on the PetsMove.org site and then log & track your dog’s activities.  But instead of calorie counting, you'll collect "paws" and will use these paws toward reward prizes throughout the program. Also, enter the Pets Move video contest for a chance to get a custom pet fitness and feeding program, some great canine fitness products, and a chance to appear on The Pet Show with TV personality and veterinarian, Dr. Katy Nelson on ABC TV in Washington DC.

Steve says, "We humans are stewards of our dog’s health and well-being and overall, as a nation (and a world) we are failing our beloved pets.  With Pets Move, we aim to change that."

Thunderleash review and giveaway

We've been working with Ike on his leash skills, trying to get him to walk nicely without tugging and pulling, so I was very interested in trying out the new Thunderleash. (Keep reading for your chance to win one of your own!)
Thunderleash is a product I trust, because the company makes products to help keep pets safe and comfortable. I use the Thundershirt for my dogs and they love it. So I had high hopes for the Thunderleash. The leash is made so that it can be used as a regular leash clipped onto the collar, and then converted into a harness. We read the instructions, which are clear after making the initial adjustments, hooked it up as a harness and set off on our walk.

The harness is designed to put gentle pressure on the dog's torso to help reduce the amount of pulling. Unfortunately, we didn't find that it helped Ike to stop pulling. I think this is in part because the harness clips in the back, which actually enables a dog to pull more strongly.  I'd have preferred a front-attaching harness arrangement. Also, Ike is a strong puller and had not had any real leash experience before we adopted him. Once we've been more successful at working with him, he may respond to this better.

PROS:
1. Easy to use
2. Sturdy materials
3. Dual use-- use as leash or harness

CONS:
1. Harness attaches at the back which may allow for stronger pulling

This could be a great product for you if your dog is not a strong puller, or if you have a use for a leash that can convert to a harness as needed. You're getting the great Thundershirt brand quality, and a 100% satisfaction guarantee from the company.

Full Disslosure: I received one Thunderleash to review and one to giveaway from Thundershirt. This in no way influenced my review. The opinions here are 100% my own.

dogIDs Collar with Engraved Nameplate Giveaway

Just like my ever-expanding wardrobe of dog-themed t-shirts and comfy flip flops, Kelly now has several collars in different colors and materials we can rotate between. Lucky dog! But was anything missing from her dog collar wardrobe?

Turns out there was!

Recently we were offered a chance to review a collar from dogIDs, an online retailer specializing in custom dog ID tags and other products. I liked what I saw on the website--nice quality products and a good variety. (Check it out! You can win one for your dog in the contest below!)

I'd been envious of Brooks' leather collar, so I chose a green Italian leather collar with personalized name plate.

Here are some of the reasons I LOVE this collar:
*The leather is soft and flexible, allowing for a comfortable feel on my dog's neck.

*The measurements were exactly right according to the "how to measure" charts on the site. Kelly is 32 lbs and took a 14 - 18 inch collar.

*The name plate is engraved deeply so it's easy to read.

*The name plate is secured on the collar so it won't fall off or become caught on something.
*The name plate sits in the back of the collar, not dangling beneath the chin, so it's easy to locate and read.

*The buckle and hardware are well-made, so I can feel safe that they won't break or open when they're not supposed to.

*The look of the collar and tag is really classy!

There were also so many choices. Once I decided on the collar, I got to select between brown, blue, yellow, purple, green and more. Then I chose what I wanted the ID tag to say--I chose Kelly's name and our telephone number. There was room for more information if I'd desired. I even got to chose from more than a dozen fonts.

Kelly's dogIDs collar is excellent quality and looks great too. We highly recommend dogIDs collars and tags.
Now on to the giveaway!

Giveaway: One dogIDs collar with laser-engraved buckle or plate.

To enter:
*Visit dogIDs website. Leave a comment here telling me which collar with laser engraving you'd like to win! (Choose from options in: personalized nameplate collars, personalized buckle collars, or "ScruffTag" Collars.)

*Like dogIDs on FB  and leave a comment telling me you did.

*Follow @dogids on Twitter and leave me a comment telling me you did.

*Like PeggyFrezonBooks on FB and leave a comment telling me you did.

*Follow @peggyfrezon and leave a comment telling me  you did.

*Subscribe to my newsletter Pawsitively Pets, and leave a comment telling me you did.

You don't have to do everything, but Kelly would wag if you did! (Extra entries=extra chances to win!)

Contest void where prohibited. Contest ends July 8, 2013 at 11:59pm.
Full Disclosure: We were provided with one collar with laser engraving to review and one to give away. This in no way affected my review and the opinions expressed here are 100% my own.

* Have you been using your Slimdoggy app? It's a great companion to K9Kamp. You can track your dog's daily activities and calories burned, as well as how many calories they're eating. One cool tool is the GPS tracking. You can click, take a walk, and the app automatically tracks how far you've gone and how many calories you've burned your walk. No need to do any head-numbing calculating yourself. The app's food list is also impressive. Click on your dog's food and you'll see how it ranks from 1(low) to 10 (high) pawprints, how many calories per cup, and the list of ingredients. Our dog food, Innova Senior Plus ranked 9.9 pawprints! yay!

There's also a Slimdoggy widget available for your website! We have ours here.

Natural Balance Fat Dogs free bag giveaway

When Natural Balance contacted me about their new Fat Dogs dog food, they couldn't have approached me at a better time. These past few months I've been focusing on pet health and fitness, with our new FitDog Friday blog hop, the upcoming K9Kamp starting tomorrow, and my forthcoming new book, The Dieting with my Dog Guide to Weight Loss and Maintenance, full of tips and fun activities for taking off the weight and keeping fit, for people and dogs!

I had a fat dog, our yellow lab Hudson, so I know how challenging it can be to keep a dog in shape. And when Kelly started to gain weight, right along with me, I knew I had to take steps to get us both fit and healthy. One of the steps I took was to take a close look at the food I offered and the ingredients to make sure they were nutritious, healthy, and low in fat. Natural Balance pet foods has a new line you might like to consider. Recently Natural Balance ran a Lovable Fat Dogs and Fat Cat contest and selected two winners and six runners up to help with the process of losing weight. They also feature Fat to Fit videos on their website.

Fat Dogs and Fat Cats:
is Natural Balance's lowest calorie formula yet
provides a balanced diet of protein and fiber
helps pets lose weight while maintaining lean body muscle
contains added fiber to help keep pets feel full
can be fed for both weight loss and weight maintenance

Natural Balance sent us a sample bag to try, a measuring tape, bone-shaped pedometer, a voucher for a free bag, and one to give away. They provided this strategy for weight loss:

Step 1: Determine whether your pet is at a Healthy Weight.
Check! At 32 lbs, Kelly is at a healthy weight for her (mixed) breed. I'll feed her for maintenance to keep the weight off.

I measured her waistline and it's 21 inches. Good girl Kelly! She's at a good size right now.

Step 2: Weigh your pet regularly

Step 3: Check Feeding Table on the back of your dog food bag for serving size.
**I consult with my veterinarian and consider activity level and other factors to determine feeding amount. For Kelly, it's 3/4 cup twice a day.

Step 4: When introducing new food, transition it into existing food slowly.
We tried the sample bag, and Kelly loves the taste of Natural Balance Fat Dog!

Step 5: Incorporate Exercise. Walk, run, and play with your dog. Also, K9 Kamp is a fun way to exercise too!

Would your dog or cat like to try Fat Dog or Fat Cat? Enter the Rafflecopter for your chance to win a free 10 lb bag!

Best Flea and Tick Tool and Giveaway

It can be lurking anywhere...right in your back yard. Those awful little bugs crawling around, waiting to jump on your dog and make him itch or worse.
 Worse?
 1. Fleas not only cause itching--my vet described the discomfort of flea bites as a fiery burning pain that is beyond uncomfortable for most dogs.
2. Many dogs have allergies to fleas causing even worse reactions.
3. Most flea treatments contain strong chemicals that you have to apply to your dog's skin, which we all would like to try to avoid when possible.

4. Fleas are a nightmare to try to get rid of, requiring you to treat your whole house, bedding, rugs, furniture, etc.
5. Ticks embed in the dogs and feed on their blood and...okay just gross.
6. Many ticks carry diseases, some of which humans may get too
7. Deer ticks may carry Lyme Disease. May is National Lyme Disease awareness month. Lyme Disease is a serious condition if left undiagnosed and untreated.

How about a giveaway?
The best way to take care of flea and tick problems is to discover it quickly. Check your dog when she comes in from outside. They don't need to be playing in the woods to get fleas or ticks. Kelly and our lab before her, Hudson, both got ticks in our back yard, and they both got Lyme disease. Luckily they were treated and recovered completely. Kelly gets the Lyme vaccine and flea and tick preventative. And I also check her fur for little invaders. The Company of Animals has a handy Tick and Flea Comb, with one side to comb to pick up the tiny little flea residue and eggs. The other side has a slit designed to capture complete ticks. It's a great little tool that will be a big help. They sent us one to try out, and it's easy to use, even through all Kelly's thick fur.

Luckily, we found no fleas or ticks!

We gave away two Tick and Flea Combs on PPP Pawsitively Pets newsletter, and now we have 3 more to give away here. Enter for your chance to win!

*Full disclaimer: We were provided with one Tick and Flea Comb to review, and 5 for giveaway. This did not affect our review, these opinions are 100% my own.
