FitDog Friday- Meet the Chesapeakes

Today I'm combining FitDog Friday with the Pet Blogger Gift Exchange!

Pet Blogger's Gift Exchange is co-hosted by Something Wagging This Way Comes and I Still Want More Puppies. In the gift exchange, I was paired with  JoAnn Stancer  at Sand Spring Chesapeakes. I was so excited because I'd get to meet a blogger, and learn more about a great breed of dog. Chesapeake Bay Retrievers are great-looking dogs, and the ones I've met have a lovely temperament. I've been visiting the blog, communicating with JoAnn and learning about her and her dogs. I'd like you to meet them too!

The Blog: Sand Spring Chesapeakes
Sand Spring Chesapeakes participates in Monday Mischief, Wordless Wednesday, This and That Thursday, FitDog Friday, Follow up Friday, and Black and White Sunday.

The pets:
Nellie, Gambler, Glory. And recently beautiful Norman crossed over the rainbow bridge. Since we recently lost Brooks and can relate to the recent loss of a dear pet, I feel JoAnn and I were matched up for a reason.

Gambler and Glory are certified therapy dogs!
Marsh Kitty has the coolest cat tree:

The person:
JoAnn and her husband run a small kennel in Wisconsin and breed Chesapeake Bay Retrievers.
JoAnn is an avid hunter
JoAnn competes with her dogs in hunt tests and field trials.

Because I know so little about hunt tests and field trials, I asked JoAnn some questions to learn more about her and her dogs.

1. How do your dogs stay fit?
I have three Chesapeake Bay Retrievers that love to train for Hunt Tests during the summer as well as compete in them and love to hunt in the fall. We hunt waterfowl as in ducks and geese and upland as in pheasants. They do go turkey hunting with us also. Each fall they get to go to Saskatchewan for a snow goose hunt where they get many retrieves in a weeks time.

2. How much exercise do they get every day?
I work part time so usually have 2 days off during the week and then the weekends so that is when we do our training and hunting. This fall when we are pheasant hunting we have gone for 2 hrs to 4 hrs to 6 hrs one day. We go as long as it takes us to get our limit which lately has been a minimum of 2 hrs. During the summer months they do get to be trained more as it doesn't take as long. Each dog I would say gets 10-20 minutes of training a day depending if we are doing land or water work.

3. What is your biggest challenge in keeping them fit?
I would say my biggest challenge is time. In the summer have more time so have more time to work with them but in the winter days are shorter and days are colder so don't have as much time to stay fit. Food goes along with that challenge as we have to make sure we adjust the food allotment for the time and training we are doing to keep them fit.

4. What is involved in a hunt test?
There are two organizations that  recognize hunt tests the UKC (United Kennel Club) and AKC (American Kennel Club). Your dog needs to be registered to be able to compete. You train for different levels and clubs host hunt test events during spring-fall months. The levels in UKC are Started, Seasoned and Finished. Started you need to have your dog retrieve two single land marks and two single water marks and deliver the bird back to you. Seasoned is a double retrieve (one bird thrown one way and one bird thrown another way), your dog goes and retrieves one mark then has to remember where the other mark was and go get that and deliver it to hand. There is also a blind retrieve which is a bird placed in the field that the dog didn't see and you have to use a whistle and hand signals to guide them to the bird. Finished is a triple retrieve with a blind. You have to pass each level to gain points towards a title in each level. AKC Hunt Tests are basically the same but have different levels. Their levels are Junior Hunter, Senior Hunter and Master Hunter. They have to do the same retrieves and blind work but the bird has to be delivered to hand. You have to pass 4 junior hunter and senior hunter tests to get a title and pass 5 master hunter tests to get a title. The titles show up on their pedigree.

5. What is involved in a field trial?
Field trials are only recognized  by AKC. They are similar to hunt tests in the retrieving aspect and blind work but you stretch out the distance by 150-600 yards. It is all about the straightest line to the mark without help. The dogs are all competing against each other their is only one winner in a field trial. It's not a pass/fail like hunt test.

6. What qualities make a good Chesapeake Bay Retriever?
Drive, desire and dedication I feel make a good Chessie. You have to have a dog that wants to do the work and has the desire to do it. Every Chessie has it's own personality and needs a good foundation and good training. Knowing how to train a Chessie, which is different than a lab, is also what makes a good Chesapeake.

JoAnn is a great person and a great blogger, who cares so much about her wonderful pets. I am honored to be paired with Sand Spring Chesapeakes in the Pet Blogger Gift Exchange. Great Giveaway Week #4- Wag 'n Load

Here on FitDog Friday, we know the benefits of getting out and walking our dogs.
No Kelly! You need to walk for exercise!!

We also believe in cleaning up after our dogs. But there's a problem.
Problem: What to do with your fully loaded poo bag as you continue your walk?
Solution:
a. Just carry it and ignore the looks of everyone who knows what's inside that thin plastic bag.
b. Stuff it in your coat pocket and vow to run to the dry cleaners immediately after.
c. Drop it in a neighbor's trash can along your route and hope they don't notice.
d. Wish that someone would invent a better way!

Well you don't have to wish any longer. Check out Wag 'n' Load, a new, convenient, discreet and sanitary way to take care of your dog's business.

Wag 'n' Load is a nice, nylon pouch you can carry hands-free by either clipping onto your dog's leash, or your belt loops. You can attach a poo bag dispenser on one side, and hand sanitizer on the other. (ugh! I can't tell you how many times I've needed hand sanitizer after cleaning up after my dogs!)

We were sent two samples to try out and review.
PROS:
* attractive
* the velcro attachments hold fast. The bag didn't slip down the leash!
* convenient
*durable. Nicely made, thick material, lined pouch
* washable
* a great solution to this problem!

CON:
* the bag, especially when "loaded," adds weight to the leash that can feel a bit awkward

(update: The designers note that if you attach the velcro through the loop at the top or very bottom of the leash, the extra weight is not noticeable.)

Although the Wag 'n' Load bag is a bit heavy on the leash, there was something kind of satisfying about having my dogs carry their own business!
It can be attached to your belt loops instead. As an alternative, I would also like to use the Wag 'n' Load with a long, over the shoulder strap.

Overall, Wag 'n' Load is extremely well-made and designed. This is an awesome product that every dog walker should have. We really like ours, and consider it an essential dog walking tool.

Would you like to win a Wag 'n' Load of your own?
Just enter the Rafflecopter below! TWO lucky winners will each receive one Wag 'n' Load dog waste bag carrier! And if you don't win, here's a GREAT DEAL--you can order one here for 30% off through December 20th.

FitDog Friday- Get Fit when it's Cold Outside

What can I do for exercise with my dogs when it's cold outside?
I'll be the first to admit, I'm not excited about going out for walks in the snow or rain or freezing cold. But, the dogs are always willing!

Here are some ideas for ways to have fun and get fit with your dogs this winter:

1. Play an indoor game. Throw a soft ball (Chuck-it makes an indoor soft ball you can chuck!) or hide a favorite toy and help your dog "seek". Even in smaller spaces, you can both get some exercise by playing.

2. Take your dog along on an outdoor sport that you enjoy. You can take your dog along cross country skiing. Jessica, Chester and Gretel of You Did What with Your Wiener go snowshoeing together. It looks like a lot of fun!

3. Consider a dog treadmill. Krista of Dog Tread explains how a dog treadmill is a great way for your dog to get exercise when the weather outside is frightful. Wouldn't it be fun to exercise on your own treadmill while your dog exercises on his own dog treadmill beside you?

4. Join K9 Fit Club! Tricia Montgomery founded a gym where people and pets work out together. Today there are more than a dozen K9 Fit Clubs across the country. If there's not one near you, maybe you'd even want to consider opening one of your own!

5. Just Do It! Bundle up, and if your dog needs it put a sweater and booties on him and get out the door. Once you get moving, you'll probably be glad you did!

6. Shameless promotion! You can also check out a copy of The Dieting with My Dog Guide to Weight Loss and Maintenance where you'll find Jessica's tips on snowshoeing, Krista's advice on doggy treadmills, K9 Fit Club's step by step floor exercises you can do with your dog, and more! What better way to make a workout more fun! (p.s. It would make a great Christmas gift, and if you email me now, I'll get you a signed copy for 50% off!)

FitDog Friday- Dismembered Toys

Play is an important part of keeping fit. Kelly and Ike like their toys as much as any dog. But Kelly, especially has a serious problem--she dismembers her toys. Just look at this collection of hands, ears and tails.

A stuffie doesn't last 2 minutes in the house before it's de-squeaked, unstuffed and on it's way to being decapitated.

Ike, on the other hand, isn't terribly interested in stuffies. He loves tennis balls, and recently he's discovered a new toy that he's chewed on for weeks without any damage. I'm super impressed with Planet Dog's Snowball. It holds up to chewing, and it must retain it's yummy taste because Ike still licks it and mouths it. He even throws it in the air and catches it himself.

What is your dog's toy-playing style? Do they rip them apart like Kelly, or savor them like Ike?

FitDog Friday- Three Fit Dogs

Kelly and Ike may be working hard at diet and exercise, but they're not the only fit dogs in blogville. At K9Kamp, we had lots of dogs link up and share what they're doing to get in a few extra minutes of fitness with fun and games.  I wish I could tell you all about everyone who participated, and I'll try over the next few months.

In our wrap up I told you a bit about Slimdoggy, My GBGV Life, Pooch Smooches, Something Wagging This Way Comes and You Did What with Your Wiener. And Tuesday I told you about Gizmo from Terrier Torrent. Here are three more of our Kampers!

Heart Like a Dog
Sampson and Delilah got active with a frisbee in the park, but I think the most fun they had was dragging the Mama through the woods, chasing a squirrel. Now, wasn't the theme for this month "fun and games"?  Sounds like fun to Kelly and Ike! No matter what, it's clear that these two dogs make sure their mom is keeping up and keeping fit!

I Just Want More Puppies
Since "fun and games" was the theme for Kamp, Tavish and Bella found just the right combination, playing together! There's even a movie to document the activities!

To Dog with Love
Rocco promoted play as fitness too, with his own backyard bootcamp! And games of fetch in the hall. They know how to make fitness fun.

K9Kamp is co-hosted by Peggy's Pet Place, Kol's Notes, and You Did What with Your Wiener
(also hosting the monthly Keeping up with K9 Kamp challenge!)

Let's get moving, Mom!

K9Kamp Wrap Up

THANK YOU from your K9 Kamp coaches!

K9Kamp is over! We had a lot of fun and games. Here's what some of our bloggers have been up to:

* You Did What with Your Wiener focused on fetch, tug games,  nose work. Check out their cute video of Chester and Gretel getting fit on the K9FitBone from Dog Tread.

*Pooch Smooches also opted for games of fetch, while Jackie did jumping jacks. And there were also some dance parties!

* Honey at Something Wagging this Way Comes found that foster dogs made great workout partners. And Pamela found that having two or more dogs helped keep her active and fit as well.

*Jack and Maggie from Slimdoggy tackled the big hill...the really big hill!

* Emma, Katie and Baylie got out all the toys in My GBGV Life, and made a great Chase and Wrestle video!

and more! Stay tuned for more profiles of our Kampers!

Thank you all for a great K9Kamp, to all our featured bloggers, and to all who followed along at home.  Don't forget to enter to win prizes too--ending soon so hurry! If you blogged about K9Kamp, link up here.
