Fun & Furry, Fit & Healthy Blog Tour First Stop- Kol's Notes

The Fun & Furry, Fit & Healthy Blog Tour has begun! We're doing a lot of celebrating for our new book, The Dieting with my Dog Guide to Maintenance and Weight Loss, including a great gift pack giveaway all month long! And the first stop on our tour today!

Also coming up, your chance to win a free copy of the book as well.
All this month we'll be touring all around blogville, visiting your favorite blogs where they'll ask me some questions about the book, slimming down and getting fit with your furry best friend. (Kelly and Ike have gotten out the flashcards and are quizzing me now!)

The first stop on the tour today is Kol's Notes. I can't think of a better place to start. Kol is my co-host for K9 Kamp (along with You Did What with your Wiener) and committed to helping others keep fit and healthy with fun activities together (our next Kamp is coming up in October!). So please stop over today and find out more about the book, including what fitness activity we love...and what one we hate.

Here's the rest of the tour schedule!

FitDog Friday- Sneak Peek

I couldn't think of a better place to share a sneak peek at my new book cover, than with my friends here on FitDog Friday! Ever since I wrote Dieting with my Dog, people have been asking me for more practical tips and how-to's for losing weight and getting fit with their dogs. I'm excited to announce that The Dieting with my Dog Guide to Weight Loss and Maintenance will be released mid-August. Yes, that soon! (And a big thank you to Jodi from Kol's Notes for help designing the cover!) The book features sections on running, hiking, backpacking, swimming and more from your favorite bloggers, all experts in getting fit and having fun with their dogs. AND exercises you can do with your dog. One of the most important sections shares tips on how to maintain your weight loss. So keep checking back and I'll soon have more news and an exciting contest where you can enter to win a copy!

This is a blog hop! FitDog Friday is co-hosted by Peggy's Pet Place, Slimdoggy and To Dog With Love.

Am I crazy about dogs...or just crazy?

You'd think I'd be excited when a friend told me, "I just read a book, and it mentions your book!"

Well I was excited...except the book is called Rabid: Are you crazy about your dog or just crazy? What on earth did this author, Pamela Redmond Satran say about my book? Does she think I'm....crazy?

Satran's book description states, "Rabid holds a humorous mirror up to our dog-centered society,  helping us laugh at our own behavior, and at the even-more-insane antics of all those other dog people." Curiosity got the best of me and I finally decided that I had to order a copy of the book and see what it said.

I found my entry on page 84 in the chapter Arts and Entertainment. Satran states, "There's an endless appetite for dog books, one that writers and publishers are only too eager to keep filling. (Imagine!) Some of the subjects new to the shelves:" She then lists more than a dozen books--Reiki for Dogs; Dog-Friendly Gardening; Dog, Inc.; and....Dieting with my Dog!

Phew! She doesn't think I'm crazy!
I don't think.
The author doesn't really make judgements. The book simply lists current and popular dog products, accessories, services and treatments, including:
pawdicures
creative haircuts
fashion and costumes
dog resorts
treats such as foie gras flavored ice cream
doggie day care
websites such as Dogster, Dogbook, and Life with Dogs
instructions on how to knit a sweater from your dog's fur

Where the author feels the line is drawn between crazy about our dogs...or just crazy...I'm not sure.
What do you think--is there a line? Is there anything you feel might be over the top? Do your friends or loved ones suspect you might be a bit over the top yourself?

* Have you been using your Slimdoggy app? It's a great companion to K9Kamp. You can track your dog's daily activities and calories burned, as well as how many calories they're eating. One cool tool is the GPS tracking. You can click, take a walk, and the app automatically tracks how far you've gone and how many calories you've burned your walk. No need to do any head-numbing calculating yourself. The app's food list is also impressive. Click on your dog's food and you'll see how it ranks from 1(low) to 10 (high) pawprints, how many calories per cup, and the list of ingredients. Our dog food, Innova Senior Plus ranked 9.9 pawprints! yay!

There's also a Slimdoggy widget available for your website! We have ours here.

* Don't forget the Grrrreat K9Kamp prizes! Enter for our prize package worth $200! Prizes include:

Diana Ozimek is the Director of Trainers from K9 Fit Club, the most pawsome gym  in the world, where you can work out with your dog! Diana and K9 Fit Club are not only our Official K9Kamp trainers, but also featured in my forthcoming book, The Dieting with my Dog Guide to Weight Loss and Maintenance (available summer 2013), offering up trainer tips and instructions for fantastic exercises to do with your dog. We have a sneak peak for you today--a guest post from Diana, with one of the exercises from the book!

Get Fit with a K9 Fit Club Trainer
Guest Post by Diana Ozimek, Director of Trainers at K9 Fit Club

At K9 Fit Club we know how much fun it is to workout with our dogs. Now it’s time for everyone at K9 Kamp to have fun and get all the great benefits of working out with their dogs too! Your dog is your best friend and your best workout partner, they will never cancel on you, are always happy to exercise and it’s just more fun to have them by your side. Working out with your dog will help you become a consistent exerciser and you’ll start seeing the results of your hard work.  Your dog benefits as much as you do.  They will have a stronger bond with you while staying healthy and fit.  Active dogs who live at a healthy weight will avoid health issues and diseases just like we do.  Regular exercise for your dog will also help curb anxiety and negative behavior that can come on when they do not have consistent exercise and training.

Try this exercise to help you lose weight and increase muscle tone.  Have your dog try it with you so they can be healthy and happy too.

Partner Push-Ups*:

  • Ask your dog to sit or lay down next to you.
  • When you move into the push up position, it is helpful to hold the leash held in both hands, if your leash is long enough.
  • Perform 10 push ups keeping your head up in line with your spine and abs pulled tight.
  • At the same time, your pup can do push ups with you! Ask them to rotate between a sit and a down, 3-5 times.
  • Give lots and lots of praise each time they follow your command!
*Exercises from The Dieting with my Dog Guide to Weight Loss and Maintenance (summer 2013).

Next FitDog Friday co-K9Kamp counselor Kol from Kol's Notes will feature another exercise from Diana, Zeus and K9 Fit Club, so be sure to check it out! And visit K9 Fit Club's website for more information about their gym. If you don't have one in your area, you could even get one started!

Kelly reminds you, there's still time to enter our K9Kamp Rafflecopter for a prize package valued at $200!

FitDog Friday--How author Patti Lawson and her dog Sadie stay fit

Today is FitDog Friday, sponsored by Peggy's Pet Place, SlimDoggy and To Dog With Love. Join in every Friday by linking up or visiting the blogs in the hop, and be sure to comment and you'll be entered into a giveaway for great FitDog prizes.

Today please welcom Patti Lawson, the author of a fantastic book, The Dog Diet. How much do I love this book! Patti's experiences are different from mine in Dieting with my Dog, yet our conclusions are the same: dogs make great weight loss buddies!

I had the opportunity to ask Patti about getting fit with her dog:

1. How do you keep your dog fit and healthy?

PL: As with people, there are two parts to dog fitness. 1. Diet   2. Exercise

DIET
Sadie eats a grain free except for quinoa and brown rice organic diet. Sometimes I cook for her and other times I use two human grade foods made in the United States. Lucky Dog Cuisine and Honest Kitchen. She gets natural jerky treats...mainly salmon. Sadie has several food allergies so we take that into consideration when choosing her food.

Sadie and Patti preparing the SALAD BOX...a staple of the DOG DIET.

EXERCISE--We DOGERCISE...walking and incorporating play time with exercise. Sadie likes tug of war and running after her many stuffed animals. She is a sprinter...sprints off the deck chasing squirrels in our yard. We live in the woods so we have plenty of squirrels for her to chase. Our subdivision is very hilly...we live in WV so it's no surprise...and we walk it every day possible and on weekends twice a day. I believe part of exercise is also mental. I challenge Sadie with little games...I read to her...she has a puzzle ball from Planet Dog I recommend for all dogs. You place small treats in it and then your dog has to figure out how to get them out. Very mentally challenging. Maybe I wouldn't eat so much chocolate if I had to get it out of the puzzle ball! Sadie also goes to daycare because she doesn't like to stay alone and I am convinced this is good for her. She is active with the staff and other dogs all day instead of sleeping and waiting for me to come home.

2. How does your dog help you get fit and healthy?

PL: I know that Sadie's health depends on me so I challenge myself to do the best I can for her. In doing so, I am eating better and exercising. Yes...we have the occasional McDonald's treat and squirt of whipped cream. I want Sadie to be with me as long as possible and I want to be here for her as long as possible so she is my inspiration. If I don't feel like walking, I know she NEEDS to walk and so we go out the door and just do it. It always turns into a great time.

Sadie is practicing for beach trips with a tennis ball and a water frisbee!

3. What is Sadie's favorite activity?

PL: At risk of sounding narcissist I believe her favorite activity is being with me. No matter what we do...she enjoys it. She also loves to travel, likes sniffing out leftovers on room service trays in hotels and riding in the big convertible her "Dad" owns.

4. What is one unhealthy food Sadie would eat all day if you let her?

PL:  Hamburgers....hands down. She LOVES hamburgers...sniffs them all the way home in the bag!

What is Sadie's favorite healthy food?

PL: Sadie loves salmon which is very good for her.
