FitDog Friday- Get Fit when it's Cold Outside

What can I do for exercise with my dogs when it's cold outside?
I'll be the first to admit, I'm not excited about going out for walks in the snow or rain or freezing cold. But, the dogs are always willing!

Here are some ideas for ways to have fun and get fit with your dogs this winter:

1. Play an indoor game. Throw a soft ball (Chuck-it makes an indoor soft ball you can chuck!) or hide a favorite toy and help your dog "seek". Even in smaller spaces, you can both get some exercise by playing.

2. Take your dog along on an outdoor sport that you enjoy. You can take your dog along cross country skiing. Jessica, Chester and Gretel of You Did What with Your Wiener go snowshoeing together. It looks like a lot of fun!

3. Consider a dog treadmill. Krista of Dog Tread explains how a dog treadmill is a great way for your dog to get exercise when the weather outside is frightful. Wouldn't it be fun to exercise on your own treadmill while your dog exercises on his own dog treadmill beside you?

4. Join K9 Fit Club! Tricia Montgomery founded a gym where people and pets work out together. Today there are more than a dozen K9 Fit Clubs across the country. If there's not one near you, maybe you'd even want to consider opening one of your own!

5. Just Do It! Bundle up, and if your dog needs it put a sweater and booties on him and get out the door. Once you get moving, you'll probably be glad you did!

6. Shameless promotion! You can also check out a copy of The Dieting with My Dog Guide to Weight Loss and Maintenance where you'll find Jessica's tips on snowshoeing, Krista's advice on doggy treadmills, K9 Fit Club's step by step floor exercises you can do with your dog, and more! What better way to make a workout more fun! (p.s. It would make a great Christmas gift, and if you email me now, I'll get you a signed copy for 50% off!)

FitDog Friday- What to Look for in Pooch and Person Fitness Classes

How many times have you thought that you'd go to the gym more often, if you could bring along your dog? Or wished that there was a place where you and your dog could work out together?

Did you know that there actually are such places? Dog fitness, and dog and pet parent fitness is on the rise and becoming the newest trend. In my new book, The Dieting with my Dog Guide to Weight Loss and Maintenance, there is even a section with step-by-step Woof Workouts for you and your dog, from K9 Fit Club.

Today, Tricia Montgomery, Founder of K9Fit Club, offers these tips in what to look for when seeking a fitness class for you and your dog:

1.Training and Credentials- Trainers should have experience and training in the services they are offering.
2. First Aid Training- It is also important that the fitness facility have qualified staff that has some experience in veterinary care. Always ask what their staff qualifications are, and make sure they have a veterinarian who can attend to emergencies or situations that might arise. (As with any aspect of your dog's health, you should consult with your veterinarian before you and your dog engage in a new fitness routine.)
3. Varied Programs- The program or facility should be able to tailor programs for not only a person’s needs but a dog's age, breed, weight range and additional health-related issues. Make sure the exercises and programs are fundamentally sound.
4. Assessments and Evaluations- Does the program offer an assessment and an evaluation for the newbies? Are there special classes designed for the new participants to learn the basic fitness moves and obedience commands? Does the program require a veterinary standard or Healthy to Participate form?
5. Ratio of Instructors and Dog/Owner per Class- Safety for dog, owner, participants and instructors is a big concern for any class involving both dogs and people. To ensure a safe, effective and most of all FUN workout for all participants, evaluate the number of instructors per class, per the number of dog and owner teams. Can the staff designate and handle an aggressive or fearful dog? Are there enough instructors in the class to properly monitor the number of participants within the class?
6. Programs for Those with Disabilities- Is the program you and your pooch considering for the buff of the buff or the six-pack crowd? Is there an entrance for the seniors of disabled? Are their programs tailored for anyone?
7. Emergency Preparedness- Make sure the program offered is up to date on certifications. Additionally, make sure they have an emergency plan to deal with whatever may happen. No one wants to think about, or plan for the worst. However, when it does occur, having plans in place can make the difference in any life or death situations.
8. Facility–  The facility should be clean, welcoming and designed with your both dog and person in mind. Evaluate how each dog and owner enters and is greeted. The area should be secure to prevent canine escapes, should a dog become off leash. The facility should maintain liability insurance.

I hope you find a great fitness program for you and your dog and have fun working out together!

* Have you been using your Slimdoggy app? It's a great companion to K9Kamp. You can track your dog's daily activities and calories burned, as well as how many calories they're eating. One cool tool is the GPS tracking. You can click, take a walk, and the app automatically tracks how far you've gone and how many calories you've burned your walk. No need to do any head-numbing calculating yourself. The app's food list is also impressive. Click on your dog's food and you'll see how it ranks from 1(low) to 10 (high) pawprints, how many calories per cup, and the list of ingredients. Our dog food, Innova Senior Plus ranked 9.9 pawprints! yay!

There's also a Slimdoggy widget available for your website! We have ours here.

Get Fit with a K9 Fit Club Trainer
Guest Post by Diana Ozimek, Director of Trainers at K9 Fit Club

At K9 Fit Club we know how much fun it is to workout with our dogs. Now it’s time for everyone at K9 Kamp to have fun and get all the great benefits of working out with their dogs too! Your dog is your best friend and your best workout partner, they will never cancel on you, are always happy to exercise and it’s just more fun to have them by your side. Working out with your dog will help you become a consistent exerciser and you’ll start seeing the results of your hard work.  Your dog benefits as much as you do.  They will have a stronger bond with you while staying healthy and fit.  Active dogs who live at a healthy weight will avoid health issues and diseases just like we do.  Regular exercise for your dog will also help curb anxiety and negative behavior that can come on when they do not have consistent exercise and training.

Try this exercise to help you lose weight and increase muscle tone.  Have your dog try it with you so they can be healthy and happy too.

Partner Push-Ups*:

  • Ask your dog to sit or lay down next to you.
  • When you move into the push up position, it is helpful to hold the leash held in both hands, if your leash is long enough.
  • Perform 10 push ups keeping your head up in line with your spine and abs pulled tight.
  • At the same time, your pup can do push ups with you! Ask them to rotate between a sit and a down, 3-5 times.
  • Give lots and lots of praise each time they follow your command!
*Exercises from The Dieting with my Dog Guide to Weight Loss and Maintenance (summer 2013).

Next FitDog Friday co-K9Kamp counselor Kol from Kol's Notes will feature another exercise from Diana, Zeus and K9 Fit Club, so be sure to check it out! And visit K9 Fit Club's website for more information about their gym. If you don't have one in your area, you could even get one started!

Kelly reminds you, there's still time to enter our K9Kamp Rafflecopter for a prize package valued at $200!
