My dogs like to sleep on the bed.
No two ways about it, our bed is the preferred spot in the house. Dirty paws messing up the comforter. Stray dog hairs on my pillow. Our bed just isn't big enough for husband, wife, spaniel and golden retriever. So what is the solution?
Be sure that their own bed is equally comfortable!
Kelly has a nice, cushiony bed she loves. But Brooks had a lumpy old pillow. Since he's a senior, I thought it was time for something special.

I found just what we needed at The Uncommon Dog.

I must say I'm impressed with the products on this site. Mostly dog beds, dog crates, dog carries and strollers, with other items such as dog houses and travel supplies too. I looked through the offerings-- more than 400 different dog beds alone! What I liked best was the way you can search the site: by size, color, shape, fabric, brand, price...you name it.

We decided that Brooks should have an orthopedic bed. We selected the Carolina Pet Company luxury pillow top mattress bed. This bed has a 4 inch thick foam base with a tufted pillow top above, all covered in a soft, zippered removable cover. The bed comes in chocolate, caramel, earth red and sage, and in 3 different sizes.

Once we ordered we were sent a tracking number, and the bed arrived in only 3 days! It was packaged in a sturdy box and the bed looked even better than we'd imagined. This bed is really thick and comfortable, and holds its shape.

Best of all, Brooks loves the bed. I feel better that his old bones and joints are cushioned and that he has a comfortable place of his own to sleep. 5 Tips for Positive, Happy Dog Training, and treats

"Bond to the dog with your heart, but train with your brain. In other words, don’t get emotional about your training efforts. Make it fun for the dog." -Joel Silverman

During Responsible Pet Ownership month, have you decided to work on some training issues with your dog? (Earlier this week, I asked you to help me with some of my training issues!) To make training a positive experience, dog trainer and Bil-Jac dog food advocate, Joel Silverman, offers these 5 tips:

5 Training Tips from Joel Silverman:

1. Get to know your dog and build a relationship with him. Find out what he likes and dislikes. Even notice where in the house he prefers to build the bond.

2. Set a goal of what you want to accomplish. If you display any doubt, your dog will pick up on that doubt and be less responsive. Have a game plan.

3. Understand that you will train only part of the behavior in each session. Keep the training sessions short, about two to three minutes. Repeat the session several times a day.

4. Keep it as positive as possible when working with your dog, but understand there is a right way and wrong way for a correction. Corrections are merely “interruptions.” Be open-minded.

5. Always end on a positive note. You want your dog to look forward to the next training session. When it ends, go play with him, take him out for walk and just have a good time with him… maybe he give him a treat.

Pet Dangers Hidden in the Medicine Cabinet

You know the old saying, “some of the most dangerous things are found under your kitchen sink?” Well the same can be said about your medicine cabinet, especially when it comes to your pets. Human medications can be left out in plain sight and an easy reach for any curious pet looking for a toy or snack. But these medications that are super helpful for humans can be the complete opposite for pets. Over-the-counter and prescription drugs can be extremely harmful to your pet’s health if they accidently get into their owner’s bottles. According to the Pet Poison Helpline, “almost half of the calls we receive, involve human medications.” Just in case pet owners are not aware of just how serious this can be, here are some of dvm360.com's examples of human medications that are poisonous to pets.

1. NSAIDs (Non-steroidal anti-inflammatories). The most frequent medications that are ingested by pets are NSAIDs. More commonly known as ibuprofen (e.g., Advil and Motrin) and naproxen (e.g., Aleve), these everyday pain medications are safe and effective for people, but very dangerous for pets. Kidney failure and major stomach problems like intestinal ulcers may occur if eaten by pets.

2. Acetaminophen. Another common over-the-counter pain medication is acetaminophen (e.g., Tylenol). A safe human drug, acetaminophen can do some serious damage to pets. In dogs, it can lead to liver failure, and in cats it can attack their red blood cells, which is especially dangerous. This can lead to breathing troubles and eventually an inability to hold oxygen.

3. ADD and ADHD medications. Attention Deficit Disorder and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder medications (e.g., Concerta, Adderall, Ritalin) can be life-threatening for pets. Small doses of these medications can cause tremors, seizures, elevated body temperatures, and heart problems in pets.

4. Antidepressants. Although medications like Effexor, Cymbalta, Prozac, and Lexapro are occasionally used in treating pets, overdosing can lead to many neurological problems like sedation and seizures. They can also lead to an elevated heart rate and blood pressure if the proper dosage is not used. It is important to remember that if your pet is prescribed an antidepressant, to always follow the instructions given by your vet.

5. Benzodiazepines and sleep aids. Anxiety and sleeping pills (e.g., Xanax, Klonopin, Ambien, Lunesta) can be very helpful to people who need them. But oddly enough, these pills will have an opposite effect in pets. Agitation, incoordination, and severe lethargy can be the result of a pet ingesting one of these pills, and can also cause liver failure in cats.

There is nothing more valuable than your pet’s well being, so take all the necessary precautions to ensure they stay happy and healthy.

Stuffie--mine, all mine!

I am not very intuitive about training. I've taught my dogs the basics--sit, stay, etc--but when it comes to solving basic household doggy dilemmas, I've got a lot to learn.

That's why I figured I'd go right to the experts--other dog lovers who have perhaps dealt with the same issues and found a solution. So, would you solve my training problem?

Problem: Toy Hoarding

When we adopted Brooks, Kelly let it be known right away that she was the boss. Brooks respectfully backed off, which is really one of the main reasons why we are able to have two dogs. We've worked out most situations, such as feeding them in different rooms. But playtime is a problem. Kelly wants ALL the toys ALL the time. The only thing she'll let Brooks have is tennis balls, which he loves (and she's too girly to bother herself with chasing after them.) But when it comes to any other toys- chewing, tugging, dismembering stuffies or anything else, Kelly won't share.

I've tried separating them for toys, but now that Kelly has asserted herself, Brooks won't touch the toys, even if she's out of the room. He takes it in his mouth and seems to want to play, but then drops it and lays down and looks at it. I really don't think that he's just disinterested in toys. I think he expects Kelly to come and take it away. I am happy that he at least has tennis balls to play with, but think he'd probably enjoy a variety.

A cute white puppy wants to meet you

When my daughter introduced me to her friend's new puppy, I just knew I had to introduce all of you! That's because Gunner is so cute, I know he'll make you smile.

Gunner's mom, Jackie, answers all my questions. Meet Gunner, a 7 month old Westie.

Q- What are Gunner's best qualities?

Gunner is super friendly. If we walk into Petsmart he will randomly walk up to strangers and sit down in front of them waiting for them to pet him or give him a treat just for being him. He's bold, curious and smart.

Luckily Gunner is not a yapper but he does let us know when someone is at the door or when something in not right outside.

Q- What are the challenges?

Westies get bored easily, so you always need to have challenging toys on hand, making sure to change them out every few days.

Gunner knows how to get what he wants. Even though he knows his tricks on command, sometimes he looks at us like, "Do I get a treat if I do this?" He requires a lot of attention and if I'm not careful, my little sweet westie can turn into a little bossy pants! If I'm on the phone or not paying attention to Gunner he will start walking in front of me to stop me in my tracks, as if to say, "Hey, pay attention to me!"

Gunner is also a digger. He even finds places inside the house to dig, like the couch. My husband and I try to discourage digging between the couch cushions by setting up piles of towels or blankets with treats underneath, so he can still dig but not ruin the couch!

Q- What is his personality like?

Where do I begin to describe this furry little creature's personality? It makes me laugh just thinking about him. His top personality characteristics are:

1. Independent

2. Friendly

3. Confidant

4. Curious

5. Alert

6. Loving

7. SMART!

He always surprises me. Though he can be very obedient if we have a treat in hand, he can also be very "I do what I want." He can be a selective listener. :) He is a fast learner, super curious, energetic, happy little puppy. Every morning he acts like he hasn't seen us in ages, full of excitement and energy. When we go out for walks he likes to find branches 2-3 times his size and pick them up and run back to the apartment like he's found hidden treasure. It's hilarious to watch a little 13 lb white dog full of determination running up a stairwell with a huge branch that bangs against the metal railings.

Q- How has Gunner changed your life?

I have an autoimmune condition called systemic lupus erythemastosus. An easy way to describe it is that my body is allergic to itself and makes antibodies against my own healthy tissues causing chronic inflammation. Currently there is no cure but it is managed by suppressing my immune system with medications in order to prevent organ damage. I work as a scientist, but had to take a work break for my health.

Gunner arrived just after I stopped working and he has been my white furry ball of sunshine and joy. Although he is an active puppy, he seems to know when I'm not feeling well and will just lay in bed with me until I sum up the energy to start getting ready. Chasing him around our small apt and our daily walks is just what I needed to help keep my muscles and joints moving. The joy and laughter he fills my heart with is priceless. He is such a wonderful blessing.

Just One Click for healthy pets

Belle's One Month Anniversary!

It's my one month anniversary. It feels like yesterday when I walked into the Morris Animal Inn lobby feeling like my life was about to change. And it really has in a good way! Working on my fitness has been the best thing to ever happen to me! I've met so many new companions – both human and canine. Let me tell you all about the busy week I had!

With last week being the ‘Week of Love’ leading up to Valentine’s Day, everyone has been very cheerful. The word around the Group Play Yard was that a certain canine thought I was dog-gone cute! I was super surprised when my buddy, Leo asked me to be his Valentine! I was so happy, I couldn't wait to run and tell my girlfriends!

By the way, did I tell you that I love snow? Check out this video to see how much fun I had in the snow last week!

My training is going great! You should see how fast I am now on the treadmill! I'm still getting used to the Aqua Center but I'm sure I'll be swimming laps with Beckett in no time.

I had a really good feeling this week when I stepped on that scale. When my Fit Camp Trainer, Lisa said that my weight was down to 118lbs, I couldn’t help but let out an energized bark! I lost 3lbs in one week! That’s a total of almost 7lbs I have lost since I first came to Morris Animal Inn! I knew I was feeling great but knowing that I was able to lose that much, makes me even more motivated for next week! I've been losing about an inch a week around my belly too; at this rate, I’ll have a beach-ready body in no time!

Will Neutering Make Your Dog Fat?

This is part of Be the Change for Animals and World Spay Day blog hop.

I had a yellow lab named Hudson. He was a sweet, friendly, beautiful dog. Was Hudson neutered? Let me tell you in a minute.

As part of Spay/Neuter Awareness Month, this February 26, organizations and bloggers worldwide recognize World Spay Day, a day promoting spay/neuter as a way to save lives. This blog hop is a way to help spread the message.

Most people understand that there are more cats and dogs in shelters than there are available homes. Unfortunately, the result is that millions of homeless animals are euthanized each year. Yet there are still many pets (those not being bred by responsible breeders and/or being shown in dog shows) who aren't spayed/neutered. Part of the reason is because of misinformation about the risks or disadvantages of spaying/neutering.

One common myth preventing some people from getting their pet spayed or neutered is: If I spay/neuter my pet, he will get fat.

Now what about our yellow lab, Hudson? We did get him neutered, and he did become overweight.
But one event didn't necessarily lead to the other.

1. Was I feeding him the proper amount for his size and activity level?
2. Did I refrain from giving him table scraps and extra treats?
3. Was he getting several walks and plenty of exercise daily?

The answer to all of these questions is no. Although I loved Hudson and wanted the best for him, at the time I didn't fully understand the importance of keeping him fit and giving him enough exercise. I'm quite sure that the reasons for him being overweight had much more to do with his lifestyle than his being neutered.

Our newly adopted Brooks was neutered just before we adopted him, at 11 years old, and he has not suddenly gained weight. He's fit and healthy, eats an appropriate amount of food, and gets plenty of exercise.

So in the experience with our pets, I would say that neutering does not cause weight gain as long as you are mindful of other lifestyle factors.
So cross that reason off your list! Get your pet spayed/neutered, and help spread the word!

Kelly's Birthday...and baking a cake

It's Kelly's Birthday today!!

Kelly is 11 years old today...well, somewhere around today. We adopted her when she was about a year old, so we're not sure when she was really born. So we just kind of selected a date at random, and today's the day!!

This is the first time I've made a real birthday cake for Kelly. Usually I give her a store-bought pet treat of some kind. This year, I received a PuppyCake Red Velvet cake mix in my BarkBox, and decided that this was just the right occasion to give it a try.

The PuppyCake was easy to make. I opted to cook our cakes in the microwave, which took only a minute or two. You can make one 6 inch cake or 8 cupcakes. I opted to make 4 smaller cakes, since that is the size microwavable dish I had available.

All I had to do was mix with egg, water, and vegetable oil. Warning: Don't let the fact that you're baking a cake fool you: Do not stick your finger into the bowl and sample the batter. The mix had a definite odor, like cornbread or liver, in the kind of way that just didn't mesh with the cake and frosting visual I was preparing. Kelly and Brooks definitely noticed the aroma. And liked it. They wouldn't leave my side as I was cooking.

The dogs both loved PuppyCake. It's funny, they each had a different tactic for eating it. Brooks took the entire cake in his mouth and practically swallowed it whole. Kelly took delicate bites, and then preferred to eat hers off the floor. I'm surprised neither dog ate the paper plates!

Brooks' Books- Here's a Dog Who Loves a Healthy Life

Brooks here: A while back Mom reviewed the beautiful book, Pukka, the Pup After Merle. Many of you may be familiar with Merle's Door, the inspiring bestselling book by Ted Kerasote. At the time, Pukka had a lot to teach us about being a puppy.

Now, he's all grown up (and a very handsome yellow lab, at that.) Pukka's Promise contains important information for keeping us--your best friends--as healthy and happy as possible. This book is the perfect for both our Valentine's week posts about love, and Responsible Pet Owner's Month. Here's Mom with the rest of the review:

Peggy: When Ted Kerasote's beloved dog Merle died too soon, he knew he'd want to give his new puppy the longest life possible. What followed was questioning, researching, interviewing, observing, and gathering the must accurate, respected and responsible data to define real-life tactics we can all take to help give our dogs what they need. I came away from the book feeling like I'd just had a conversation with someone who loves animals and wants all animals to be healthy and happy. Pukka's Promise gives me cause to rethink some of my previous opinions, and feel supported in other decisions. An intelligent and heartwarming read.
