An Apple A Day

We went apple picking, and stocked up on my favorites: Macouns. If you haven't tried them yet, they are crisp, a bit tart, and super yummy.

So I figured Kelly would like to get in on the fun. Apples are great for dogs (but not apple seeds. They can be toxic.)

Here is my easy Tasty Tuesday recipe:

PB Apples

1. Core apple.
2. Fill hollow with peanut butter.
3. Give to your dog to enjoy!

Here's what happened when I gave Kelly her PB Apple.

Go figure. She didn't like it! She took a few licks of the peanut butter and then walked away.
Does your dog like PB Apples?

Kelly Visits President Arthur

We have a U.S. president buried in one of our local cemeteries in Albany NY.

Chester Alan Arthur (President from 1881-1885) lived and attended school in the Schenectady, New York area.
Every year on the anniversary of Arthur's birth (October 5, 1829), the sitting president at the White House sends a wreath, and there is a small ceremony with military color guard and local dignitaries.

Kelly joined us in visiting theArthur grave site at Albany Rural Cemetary in Menands NY, which is actually quite beautiful, as is his sarcophagus on a corner plot.

While we were there, we met a couple who were traveling across the country, visiting the grave sites of every U.S. President.

While it's not the type of vacation I'd be excited about venturing upon, I'm sure they've seen some very interesting sites along the way.

HOW TO CURE YOUR DOG'S CAR SICKNESS

It’s a struggle to get your pooch in the car. When you do, you close the door as quickly as possible. You cross your fingers as you turn the key in the ignition and back out of the driveway. Making sure to take turns at a snail’s pace, you avoid the bumpy potholes as best you can. But then you smell it. Yup, sure enough your precious pooch has vomited all over the upholstery of your backseat. It doesn’t matter if you drive slow enough to make out the eye color of the irritated person tailgating you or if you play soft classical music from the car radio to calm your canine. Every time you get your dog in the car, nausea is sure to follow. Not only do you feel sorry for poor Fido, but your backseat isn’t looking or smelling too great either. Read on for some tips to help you with this unfortunate situation.

Pinpoint the Issue
When your dog is a puppy, their ear canals are still forming and this can cause their balance to be off. Being off balance can cause motion sickness, so it is not unusual for puppies to get car sick. Unfortunately, some dogs struggle to outgrow their motion sickness. For other canines the problem can be attributed to anxiety. Many dogs have limited experience in the car and only take a ride when going to the vet; thus, it can be scary for them.

Condition
Whatever the root cause of your dog’s car sickness, it is important to try and condition your dog so that they become used to the car and grow more comfortable with it. It is especially important to start this conditioning when your dog is still a puppy. Hang out in the car while it is parked in the driveway. Bring your dog’s favorite toy and spend some time playing and petting your pup in the car. Get him or her accustomed to the smells and feel of the car while it is not moving. The next day, do the same thing but turn the car on for a short while. Progress to short drives down the block and always keep a fun dog toy in the car. Each day, go a little bit farther. Make sure to take your dog to places like the dog park or a hiking trail so they begin to associate the car as a gateway to fun activities.

Comfort is Key
Other things to consider when driving with a dog that gets carsick is to make sure the car is well-ventilated and comfortable. The back of the car or the trunk can be the bumpiest section. Your dog might be better off in the backseat, kept firmly in place with the help of a dog seat-belt or in a crate. Limit your dog’s food intake before traveling if they are prone to vomiting.

Don’t Pull Over
When your dog pukes in the car, don’t make a big deal out of it. Resist the urge to pull over and clean it up because your dog will start to realize that vomiting makes the car stop. Instead, protect your car seats with old towels and just throw them in the wash when you get home.

Medication
If your dog’s motion sickness does not seem to improve with time and conditioning, consider medication like a mild sedative. Your vet can help you choose the proper medication to ease your dog’s car-related tummy problems.

Oink Oink! Piggy Book Giveaway!

Once upon a time, Matt Whyman enjoyed the quiet life in the English countryside. Whyman was content taking care of four challenging children, a wolf-like dog, and an anxious cat. But his wife, thriving on the chaos that a big brood can bring, needed something more. And when she discovered the existence of a pig that can fit inside a purse – the trendy pet celebrities such as Paris Hilton and Posh and Becks carry around – their lives changed forever.

With the addition of not one, but two mini-pigs to their already diverse clan, The Whyman family could not anticipate the ruckus those two little squealers would cause.

Oink; My life with mini-pigs by Matt Whyman (Simon & Schuster) is funny, touching, and friendly. When the mini pigs join the family they live NOT outside in a shelter, but in the house! In the chapter, "How Much Trouble Can they Be?" Whyman confides to a friend about the exhausting schedule of  potty training piglets, keeping their ever-expanding bellies full, and competing for space on the couch.
Eventually Butch and Roxi find home in a proper sty outside, with conditional visiting rights inside the house.

Throughout the book there is always the underlying fear that Butch and Roxi aren't going to make it to the end. Maybe Whyman's wife will change her mind when she discovers they're no longer tiny enough to carry around in a purse. Maybe the children will grow tired of their noisy, messy housemates. Maybe Wyman's friend Tom will haul the pigs off to the butcher. But, truth be told, there is a happy ending to the piggy tale, and you'll be glad you stuck around for the fun.

For anyone who loves a pet...no matter how messy.

You can win a free copy of OINK! Just leave a comment below answering this question: What do you think is a good name for a pet pig? Be sure to leave a way for me to contact you. Contest closes on Friday 10/28.  I'll announce the winner on my Pet roundup next Wednesday.

Pet Friendly Walks and Ways

I saw this recently at the World's Largest Garage Sale. Plenty of dogs roamed the sidewalks, enjoying the event, so it was great to see such a pet friendly vendor. Many dogs took advantage of the offerings.

I've been thinking, is my town pet friendly? I live in a small city in upstate New York. There are no dog parks in my community, although I know of some in neighboring areas.  I looked up and found several hotels that do allow dogs, with various different policies. I don't take my dog to restaurants or shops locally, but here are a few attractions in the area that allow dogs:

Hudson River Pedestrian Bridge: 650 foot connecting Albany's historic riverfront to the Corning Preserve welcomes leashed dogs to enjoy the stroll and the views.

Howe Caverns: Leashed dogs are allowed in all above-ground cave areas and walking tours. Dogs are not allowed in the caves.

Stuyvesant Plaza: 60 store shopping mall. Dogs are welcome to explore this outdoor mall, and it is up to the individual shop owners if dogs are allowed in the stores.

Albany Riverfront Park: Offers a boat launch, bike trail and amphitheater. Leashed dogs are allowed in the park, but are not allowed during special events.

Is your town pet friendly? Have you been to an event recently that was made easier because someone thought to accommodate your furry friend?

Co-Founder of Petfinder Barks Back!

Today I am honored to have as my guest Betsy Banks Saul, co-founder of Petfinder.com.

There probably isn't a pet lover around, with access to a computer, who hasn't heard of Petfinder. Founded 15 years ago, it is now the go-to site for bringing people together with their furever friend. I am delighted that I found Kelly through Petfinder! I think back to how we got our pets when I was a kid.  Some people bought a purebred dog from a responsible breeder. But more often than not, the people I knew got a puppy or kitten from some neighbor whose dog had a litter, because in those days the dogs and cats almost all ran loose, and almost none were fixed.

Today we know a lot more about responsible pet ownership and overpopulation. Most people I know have their pet spayed or neutered. And most people know about the horrible, inhumane conditions of puppy mills and pet farming. However, many people are still purchasing puppies from pet stores.

A recent press release that arrived in my mailbox posed the question: Does the average American family realize that the “doggy in the window” most likely comes from a Puppy Mill? Do they know the repercussions when they choose to purchase a puppy from a pet store? I asked Betsy about this as we talked on the phone last week.

Me: Where are most people getting their pets today?

BBS: We all know that puppy mills are bad and adoption is good, yet less than 25% of pets coming into homes come from shelters. People walk by a pet shop in the mall and see that furry face in the window and they want to buy it now. Even people who are committed to animal welfare may see that adorable puppy in the cage and fall in love.

Me: How can people tell that the pet they are buying comes from a puppy mill?

BBS: Many pet stores have signs in front that say "Our Puppies are Not From Puppy Mills" but in the vast majority of cases that is so not true! How do we know? Because a responsible breeder would not sell to just anyone. They would want to interview you. They would want to ask you questions about things such as how much time you would be home and what your yard is like. What responsible breeder would not want to meet the potential pet parents?

Me: Some people feel that by purchasing a pet shop puppy, they are at least saving one life. While admirable, is this misguided?

BBS: Unfortunately, yes. They may be giving that dog a better home than it knew before. But they are perpetuating a terrible, terrible industry. In addition, puppy mills produce pets that are more chronically afflicted with disease and socialization issues.

Me: How can we understand why puppy mills continue to exist? Why are they legal in some states?

BBS: The reason puppy mills exist is because they are profitable. Look at proposed laws aiming to regulate conditions and standards for dog breeding, such as Proposition B in Missouri. Who was against it? Pet industry brokering and shipping companies, and also the agricultural community feared that this would be a gateway for regulations for all of agriculture.

Me: What can we do?

BBS:  1. Don't shop for pets in pet stores.
2. Spread the word.
3. Adopt a shelter pet.
4. Consider fostering a pet.
5. If you're on Twitter, tweet about an adoptable pet on Petfinder on Tweet a Pet Tuesday.

Me: Thank you Betsy for joining us today, and helping shed some light on this problem. As you know, Petfinder is where I got my dog Kelly and she's been the best friend ever! I hope everyone who is looking to add a cat or dog or other pet to their family will look into Petfinder.

With 181,000 homeless dogs on Petfinder.com right now, there are many options for people who want a family pet. Simply type in your zip code and the criteria you are looking for – whether it’s a purebred, a large dog, an older pet with special needs or a young pup who is house-trained – Petfinder.com will show you all potential canine companions who are in need of homes starting with those closest to you.

Blog the Change, Just say NO to Puppy Mills

Blog the Change!

October is Adopt-A-Shelter-Dog Month, and Peggy's Pet Place, along with dozens of blogging friends and the rest of the staff at Be the Change for Animals, have decided this is the perfect time to help spread the word about PUPPY MILLS.

We all know that puppy mills are bad and adoptions are good, yet statistics are dire. Recently, I spoke with Betsy Banks Saul, co-founder of Petfinder.com, and she told me that less than 25% of the pets coming into homes in the U.S. come from shelters. What the bark?!

Puppy mills keep dogs in small cages without human contact or socialization, keep females pregnant producing litter after litter, often feed poor quality food and provide inadequate medical care. Puppy mill puppies are more chronically afflicted with disease and socialization issues. We all know that dogs are a part of the family, NOT livestock, or worse.

Knowledge is spreading about the inhumane and horrendous practices of puppy mills, but there is still much work to be done. Here is one way you can help:

On September 9, Petland Canada announced that they would no longer sell puppies and kittens in their stores. But Petland USA has yet to reach this conclusion. Mary Haight, of Dancing Dog blog, did a little investigative journalism and discovered that,
"Investigators visited Petland’s breeders to check living conditions and found that most had hundreds of cages of
dogs that were never walked or socialized, stinking of urine,
living lives of desperation."

Please join in and save lives. Sign the petition to ask Petland USA to STOP selling pets

All of the dogs pictured are adoptable pets, waiting for their furever home, and can be found on Petfinder.com.
